Email: christimichaelis@hotmail.com Alpha Chi Omega 3 B onnie Andrews Hockema '74 kept an open mind about what sorority she would pledge, but in the end, her heart always belonged to Alpha Beta. "Seeing my mom, Bonnie House Andrews '38, pour out her time, talent and love for Alpha Chi was very inspiring," she shares. "I also got to spend Little Sisters weekend at the house with my big sister Deb Andrews Poelstra '70 and her friends." Bonnie's status as a legacy greatly enriched her experience with the sorority. "Both my mom and sister pinned me at initiation, and we added that bond of lifelong sisterhood to our relationship." As an undergraduate, Bonnie served as philanthropy chairman. "We organized and executed the first Frisbee Fling for Cystic Fibrosis." A highlight of that experience was being able to build relationships with older sisters. "Our seniors took an active part in encouraging all new members to get involved in campus activities," she says. "They were wonderful mentors." After graduation, loyalty inspired Bonnie to begin serving as an alumnae volunteer. "As a small child, my mom would come home from a week of visiting one of five AXO chapters in Indiana. She was always energized by being with young dynamic collegiate sisters," Bonnie recalls. In June of 1980, Judith Zimmerman Anderson '61, a future National President, asked Bonnie to be Alpha Beta's new chapter advisor. "I was trained at a Leadership Conference, which was held at Purdue that summer, with a new baby on the way. That also began my lifelong mentorship by my boss and sister in the bond, Mary Harrison Ford '57. I still have her home phone number memorized, and she is forever in my heart." Bonnie's favorite part of volunteering is working with a team of dedicated sisters. "We value collegian and alumna input equally. We have worked with many outstanding collegiate officers (Angela Costley Harris '86 even became national president!), and together, we ensure we have a house that is both safe and comfortable to live in." As a result of her commitment and hard work, Bonnie received the Sorority and Cooperative Life Outstanding Service Award in 2022 after being nominated by former Collegiate President Meredith Card '20. She, of course, wants to share credit for the honor with her sisters. "It was really a team award for the board, as I have surrounded myself with great people and embraced our open motto, 'Together Let Us Seek the Heights.'" Bonnie and her family live in West Lafayette, Indiana, "Almost across the street from the football stadium." She met her husband of 46 years, Bob, at an Alpha Beta summer party. They have three children, Bob, Jenn and Will, as well as four grandchildren, Charlie, Henry, Hilary and Harlow. "We love holidays, family trips to Florida, travel, cookouts, and playing games together," she shares. "No matter the time of year, being all together is my favorite gift." If you'd like to connect with Bonnie, you can send her an email at bonniehockema@gmail.com. Alpha Beta has a rich history of accomplishment, compassion, service, and success. From its inception, Alpha Beta has had loyal alumnae support and mentors who have given tirelessly of their time, talent and treasure to make our chapter great.
