the lyre letter XI CHAPTER OF ALPHA CHI OMEGA | UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-LINCOLN | SPRING 2023 O n December 3, 2022, while picking up seven large sheet cakes on a flatbed cart for a Gamma Phi Beta Parent's Club Formal Dinner, I received a devastating text that my dear friend, and our sorority sister, Willie Desch Shafer '53 passed away. With tears streaming down my face, I pushed my cart through the large warehouse store with many wide-eyed customers asking me, "Why so many cakes?" I responded with, "I am serving nearly 300 people," but I should have said, "because this is what sisters do." We love each other, we volunteer for our house or our child's house, we meet great people, and we develop bonds that will change our lives. Willie will always be an inspiration to me and my girls. Although devastated, volunteering on that cold December night for my daughter's sorority is right where I was supposed to be. As alumnae of Alpha Chi Omega, we have a responsibility to share our talents and friendship with those who came before our pledge class and those who come after. Willie and I were nearly 40 pledge class years apart, but the love that we shared for Alpha Chi Omega was equal. I am committed to continuing our sister's legacy through scholarship and volunteerism as well as protecting the integrity of good old 716. What I wouldn't give to drive just blocks from my house and pick up my neighbor, sister, and friend, Willie, and drive her down to Xi Chapter to see the beautiful changes that were made to the dining room this winter. Our new additions include a beautifully designed, custom rolling island topped with quartz and equipped with electrical outlets to serve warm nightly dinners and a refreshments area along the back dining room wall for our members to enjoy study snacks and weekend breakfasts. Sisters, as we grieve the great loss of sisters we loved so much, let's continue to remind ourselves of why Alpha Chi Omega has been so special to each of us. Also, please read more about Willie on page 3. Loyally in the Bond, Nichole Lipsys Palmer '94 Alumnae President axonichole@gmail.com A s a sorority, our goal is to empower young women to become strong leaders who are influential and have the confidence to make a difference. At some point in time, someone has helped you in your career or life. My membership in Alpha Chi Omega was one of these turning points for me. Two sisters got me involved in academic and social clubs, which led me to my lifetime career. Without Alpha Chi, my path would have been very different. This is why we ask for your continued support of Xi Chapter. The Alpha Chi Omega Education Foundation of Xi Chapter strives to support our young women as they work toward their college degrees by providing scholarships and other kinds of support. Each year, we provide $3,000 to $5,000 in support of the chapter. The Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization, which means your donations are tax deductible. Your donations to the Foundation make a difference in the scholarships and other forms of support we can provide our Alpha Chi women as they pursue their degrees. We continue to send several of our sisters to National Convention, which allows our women the opportunity to understand Alpha Chi at its best and build sisterhood across the nation. We also continue to build funds toward the Willie Desch Shafer Scholarship. This has spurred the idea of creating a larger scholarship in memory of other alumnae.
