Sigma Phi Epsilon Page 5 T his past fall, Florida Alpha found great success in intramural sports. Our brothers competed in football, softball, and soccer matches, giving it their all in every sport. Our flag football team advanced to the division championship, ultimately falling to Kappa Phi Epsilon. In the semifinals against Chi Phi, the team dug deep and gutted out a victory to make it to the championship game. Led by Brothers Connor Glass '23, Christopher Hueber '23, and Michael Laventure '23, the team went 2-2 during the regular season but went on a run during the playoffs. Although the team came up short, the brothers competed through every whistle and highlighted Florida Alpha's importance of Sound Body. Florida Alpha's softball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the intramural men's softball league. Despite a 1-1 regular season, the team won three playoff games to finish with a record of 4-2 overall. In the team's first playoff game, the squad battled in a back-and-forth game and ultimately came out on top 15-11 to advance to the second round. In the next two playoff games, the brothers' bats came alive once again, helping the team advance to the quarterfinals. Brothers Grant Mondejar '24, Justin Jackson '26, and Andy Arca '24 led the offense while Josh Batteese '25 played solid defense throughout the year to keep runs off the scoreboard. The team is excited to compete throughout the spring season in the Intramural Fraternity League. Our intramural men's soccer team had a successful season as well. Even though some of the brothers didn't have the most soccer experience, the group banded together and had tons of fun on the field. Brother Luke Thompson '25, Timmy Hodges '24, and JP Krause '22 were key players in the team's success during the season. After a 3-1 regular season record, the team came up short in a very competitive playoff bracket, making it to the second round. The brothers of Florida Alpha have had a blast with intramurals this school year and are eager to play again in the fall of 2023. Intramural Report T his past fall, the backyard of the chapter house hosted yet another successful basketball league season. After significantly increased interest from both old and new brothers, the league experienced a new record of 80 brothers signing up to be drafted to one of the 10 teams, and the league transitioned from a 3-on-3 league to a 4-on-4 league. Each team played five regular season games followed by a single elimination playoff. Per usual, the fan-favorite event of the season was the All-Star Night. This season's started with a brand-new event in which six brothers competed in a two-round dunk contest, complete with Chris Hueber '23, Austin Wendling '23, and Josh Batteese '25 as judges for the event. Despite Chad Preble '25 having the best-scoring dunk off the backboard in the first round, Jacob Krueger '23 won the dunk contest with his classic windmill dunk in the final. The most popular event of the night took place with the Celebrity All- Star game featuring brothers voted on by the Chapter, most with limited basketball skills but a competitive spirit. With the game tied at 20, Aidan Walker '25 drilled the corner three-pointer to win the game in epic fashion. Finally, to cap off the night, the Sound Body Conference handled the Sound Mind Conference in the All-Star game, which showed off a preview of the intramural SigEp 5 vs. 5 basketball team for the spring. After a long regular season and multiple rounds of playoffs in the November cold air, the championship featured two teams: one featuring captain Travis Maddox '24 and rebound machine Jake Colvin '23 versus the team including then-undefeated captain Jacob Krueger, defensive player of the year candidate Michael Cohn '23, and myself as the three-pointer specialist. After two physical games of basketball under the lights, Travis's team pulled off the upset and claimed the title for the fall 2022 season, giving Connor Glass '23 two consecutive championships and Asa Richards '26 a championship in his league debut. After hosting the league for the past two seasons, I am more than excited to host the league one last time this fall before I graduate in December. Watching the chapter come together both as players and fans over something as simple as a game of basketball has been fun to be a part of, and I can't wait to watch it continue from afar when I join the alumni of Sigma Phi Epsilon in the very near future.
