For Abby Cummings Overby '13, it's a sense of pride and ongoing responsibility to the sisterhood that gave her so much. From her time as Phi director and Chapter president to now serving on the House Corporation Committee, Abby remains devoted to Alpha Delta. Early Experiences "It was an opportunity to make fast friends and develop my leadership skills," Abby shared. She enjoyed active engagement with Alpha Delta sisters, finding new inspiration to become a better woman, friend, and leader. "I still reflect and lean on my leadership experiences." Through Abby's undergraduate roles, she developed traits that strengthened her basis of professionalism. Earning a degree in public policy leadership and theatre arts performance, Abby later graduated from Ole Miss Law School while interning and externing with two of Mississippi's Secretary of States, the Governor, and the Mississippi Attorney General. Professional Life Abby now serves as a special assistant attorney general for the state's first female Attorney General, Lynn Fitch. She currently works in the opinions and policy division, and Abby was particularly involved with creating legislation that requires equal pay for women, supports victims of human trafficking, and protects adults from abuse and exploitation. "I take pride in the meaningful work that takes place in the Attorney General's office, and it is not lost on me that I have the opportunity to be a small part of seeing big things better the lives of people in our state." Lifelong Loyalty Abby is grateful to serve the House Corporation Committee and enjoys interacting with members from various eras. As a young alumna, she hopes to lead by example through her contribution to the Sisterhood Begins at Home campaign, recognizing the impact she can have on future sisters. "My two years living in the Phi Mu house were two of my very favorites in college," Abby said. While some things have changed over time, the Phi Mu house remains a source of nostalgia that Abby is proud to financially support. "I have a large print of the house as it looked when I lived there that is hanging in my office, and I light up every time someone gives me the opportunity to talk about it and how much it means to me." Abby urges fellow young alumnae to recognize the importance of contributing to the sisterhood. While members reside across the country, there is a need to unite and support the future of Alpha Delta. "They need to see us visiting and commenting on their activities and celebrating their successes, but they also need our financial support. My challenge to my fellow sisters is to find a way to make that a reality, in some amount." Remembering fond memories is crucial for Alpha Delta alumnae to understand why their ongoing support matters. While Abby and her husband plan to start their own family, she loves staying connected with fellow sisters and their families through vacations and regular conversation. They need the support of women who have been there and done that and know it's worth it. They need to see that we still care about them, their engagement, their mental health, their success on campus—socially and academically."
