2 R egular basketball games on the house's full court, Derby Days, camping out with brothers for front-row seats at Ahearn Fieldhouse, winning the All-University softball championship (think Bad News Bears), and pledge standups at dinner are just a few memories that Bill Gonterman '88 looks back on fondly. "From Saturday morning Homecoming prep at Aggie Lounge to watching our basketball team come together to break the ΣAEs multi-year winning streak, Sigma Chi brought incredible experiences to my undergraduate years." Keeping It in the Family… As a triple legacy, Bill followed his brother, Martin Gonterman '76, as well as his father Tom and uncle Bill (who pledged at Washington University). It was an easy decision to join and an even easier decision to stay part of the brotherhood. …and Adopting a New One "When I entered my freshman year and moved into the chapter house, the active members did a great job of mentoring me and my pledge brothers," Bill said. "Having pledge brothers that were motivated to be excellent in their chosen major also provided opportunities for us to support and at times challenge each other to be our best." Working to Be Well-Rounded As the chapter developed, Bill recalls alumni, such as Tom Roberts '70, Jay Stunkel '58, and Judge Jerry L. Mershon '55, as instrumental players in the development of the chapter into one of the top houses on campus in the mid-1980s. The chapter house was two years old at the time, and these three individuals helped transform the chapter from a party house into a very well-rounded chapter academically, socially, athletically, and as a brotherhood. "They held the chapter accountable in all these areas in a way that allowed us to excel and still enjoy the college experience." Now, Bill feels that the current chapter has the commitment in place to being the well-rounded chapter that he experienced, with strong active chapter leadership as well as strong support and accountability from alumni being key. "I have stayed connected to brothers from my time period, and I participated in the recent capital campaign," he said. "As my career winds down, I do look forward to being more present with the chapter." Giving Back as an Alumnus Giving back to Sigma Chi was a simple decision for Bill, because his 4.5 years as an active chapter member provided experiences and challenges that best prepared him to take on the responsibilities of life post-college. "If we provide the college experience that develops young men in a manner that is in line with the Jordan Standard and the truth of the White Cross, there will be a lot of difference-makers leaving Manhattan," Bill said. "It takes an investment to do this correctly and with intention; 1224 Fremont is a place that this can be done." Bill is currently a partner at the accounting/ consulting firm of PwC. His focus is federal corporate income tax planning for the firm's large and mid-size client base. He and his wife, Denise, have been married for 26 years and have two daughters, one an Alpha Chi at Butler University and the other a Gamma Phi at TCU.
