T22 WHATS UP! October 16 - 22, 2022 The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Judge [Aileen] Cannon ... ruled that ... the DOJ had to wait until those documents [seized at Mar- a-Lago] had been reviewed by something called a "special mas- ter," which she said would take until Nov. 30. That would give the [former] president way too much time to hide all the re- maining evidence. I can imagine how he would stuff his Thanks- giving turkey! Importantly, the appeals court also noted that "declassifying an official document would not change its content or render it personal" and, therefore, "the declassification argument is a red herring." Red herring — also what the former president calls a Filet-O-Fish smothered in ketchup. [Russian President Vladimir] Putin's already trying to create his army of the future. Last month, he restored a million- ruble award established by Sta- lin in 1944 for women to give birth to 10 or more children, called the "Mother Heroine" award. Because after giving birth to 10 or more children, those mothers are going to want some heroin! The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Earlier tonight [Sept. 23], Elton John performed on the South Lawn of the White House. It was an exciting night for the Bidens — the concert started right after dinner, at 3 p.m. It's National Dog Week every- body! And to celebrate, Tinder is putting rescue dogs on their app to match them with potential owners. It's exactly the same as normal Tinder: everyone says they enjoy food and long walks on the beach. A popular craft beer in Australia was recalled over concerns of "excess alcohol." Meanwhile, the people who bought it were like, "We can't recall anything." Jimmy Kimmel Live! Trump claims he declassified those documents the FBI found at Mar-a-Lago using special powers no one imagined any human ever had! ... Using the power of his mind, he can de- classify documents! What he does is he puts a candle in an egg McMuffin, makes a wish, blows it out and the documents become declassified. Hocus Potus! Late Night With Seth Meyers In an interview on Fox News last night, former president Trump defended his handling of sensitive materials and said that he had the power to de- classify documents "even by thinking about it." Oh great, so on top of everything else, Trump has the shining. Well, that explains his luck with ho- tels. Taco Bell has announced that it will begin testing its new meat- less carne asada next month at dozens of locations in Dayton, Ohio, raising the question: How many Taco Bells does Dayton, Ohio, need? Russia announced plans to hold an annexation vote in occupied portions of Ukraine, and — this is cool! — they also announced what the results of the vote will be. The Late Late Show with James Cordon The Hollywood sign is now un- dergoing renovation. In antici- pation of the icon's 100th anni- versary next year, an eight-week- long refurbishment of the sign began this week. A crew of 10 workers are currently refurbish- ing the sign, ensuring it can con- tinue to disappoint tourists for years to come. Elton John will be performing at the White House tomorrow night [Sept. 23], outside on the South Lawn, for 2,000 guests. The event is being called "A Night When Hope and History Rhyme," which they can't. After the power went out at his clinic, a Texas urologist found an unusual new electricity source. He used an electric truck to power a vasectomy. But there is an easier way to use your truck to avoid getting peo- ple pregnant — just paint flames down the side. LATE LAUGHS BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media Real romance: Hulu is ven- turing into the world of reality dating with a new unscripted se- ries that has more than a few ties to the 1998 film "How Stella Got Her Groove Back." The streamer recently handed a series order to "Back in the Groove," which is set to enjoy an eight-episode inaugural run. The reality dating series will be hosted by actor Taye Diggs ("All American"), who made his film debut in "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" playing Angela Bassett's younger Jamaican lov- er. The series' title and premise also appear to be a play on the film. "Back in the Groove" will follow three 40-something sin- gle women who feel stuck in the grind of their everyday lives. They'll step out of their comfort zones and check into The Groove Hotel, a resort in the Do- minican Republic where the goal is to rediscover their youth, live joyously and find love with men half their age. Here's how Hulu announced the series: "As the saying goes, you can't fall in love with some- one else until you fall in love with yourself! At the Groove Hotel, these three women will have the opportunity to do both! Whether they find the perfect fling, friendship, true love or something in between, this is their chance to take charge and break through the double stan- dards older women face every day. And they're going to have a lot of fun doing it!" The three women in question are 43-year-old Sparkle from At- lanta, 41-year-old Steph from Miami and 42-year-old Brooke from Los Angeles. This will be Diggs' first time hosting a reality TV show, though he has hosted several Critics' Choice Awards. "Back in the Groove" is also Hulu's first unscripted original to be pro- duced under the Walt Disney Television Alternative produc- tion unit, which formed last year. Leaving Apple: Oprah Win- frey and Apple TV+ have ended their multi-year content agree- ment. The news came just days after their latest collaboration, the documentary "Sidney," about the life of Oscar-winning actor Sidney Poitier, debuted on the streaming service. According to Puck News, which was the first to report on the deal's now-de- funct status, Winfrey and Apple TV+ have agreed to continue to work together — but only on a project-by-project basis. Under the terms of the pact signed in 2018, Winfrey and Ap- ple had agreed to create and col- laborate on original content — film, TV, books, applications, etc. — for distribution on Ap- ple's platform. But the deal was non-exclu- sive, allowing Winfrey to contin- ue as chairman and CEO of OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Net- work (the cable channel she formed with Discovery Commu- nications) until at least 2025. The non-exclusive nature of the deal also explains why Winfrey's high-profile special with singer Adele, as well as her "Oprah with Meghan and Harry" inter- view, aired on CBS. In addition to "Sidney," Win- frey's multi-year agreement with Apple yielded the mental health documentary series "The Me You Can't See" with Prince Harry and "The Oprah Conver- sation," featuring discussions with newsmakers and leaders. Winfrey's star power also gave a considerable boost to Apple's efforts early on as it sought to get into the content business and market its then-new Apple TV+ subscription service to a broad- er audience. Winfrey and Apple will con- tinue to collaborate on "Oprah's Book Club," which is available on Apple Books and OprahDaily. com. Meanwhile, Winfrey's Har- po Productions has been busy with other projects, including "Queen Sugar" for OWN, the re- cent documentary "The Color of Care" for the Smithsonian Chan- nel and Hulu's upcoming "Black Cake" drama series. Golden hopes: After a year in TV exile, the Golden Globes are set to return to NBC — and stream on Peacock — in 2023. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its sig- nature awards show will air live coast-to-coast from the historic Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The 80th-anni- versary gala will take place Jan. 10, 2023, which is a Tuesday rath- er than the usual Sunday night — this is to avoid a scheduling conflict with NBC's coverage of NFL football on Jan. 8 and the NCAA national championship game on Jan. 9. NBC wouldn't officially com- ment on its deal with the HFPA, but the fact that it's a one-year agreement is significant. NBC had reportedly signed an eight- year deal with the Globes in 2018 to continue carrying the awards show through 2026, but the net- work backed out of airing the 2022 ceremony amid controver- sy and calls for a boycott after a Los Angeles Times piece on the HFPA exposed questionable fi- nancial practices and a dismal diversity record. The HFPA has since been in full reform mode, and NBC's one-year agreement suggests the network may be cautiously optimistic about the new direc- tion. Some critics may still ques- tion whether the HFPA's reforms have done enough to address all the problematic issues, and in- dustry insiders are also wonder- ing if it will be enough to win back the support of celebrities such as Hollywood's top earner in 2022, Tom Cruise ("Top Gun: Maverick," 2022), who returned all three of his Golden Globe tro- phies in protest last year.
