T8 WHATS UP! October 16 - 22, 2022 BY RAYE SMITH TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "From Scratch" Take a journey of love and self- discovery with the eight-part romantic drama series "From Scratch," premiering Friday, Oct. 21, on Netflix. Inspired by the memoir of the same name by Tembi Locke ("Eureka"), the series stars Zoe Saldana ("Guardians of the Galaxy," 2014) as Amahle "Amy" Wheel- er, an American student study- ing abroad in Italy. While there, Amy falls into a whirlwind ro- mance with Sicilian chef Lino (Eugenio Mastrandrea, "La fug- gitiva"), and as they grapple with vastly different cultural backgrounds and their opinion- ated families, the pair find themselves desperately in love. But when Lino is faced with un- imaginable health challenges, their two families come togeth- er to prove that love can con- quer more than just internation- al borders. Written for the screen by Tembie and Attica Locke ("Empire"), "From Scratch" is directed by Dennie Gordon ("Burn Notice") and Nzingha Stewart ("Little Fires Everywhere"). Roberta Rigano ("I Know This Much Is True"), Ruby Kammer ("That Dirty Black Bag"), Saad Siddiqui ("Coroner"), Jonothan Dylan King ("Taking the Fall," 2021), Paride Benassai ("Baaria," 2009), Kellita Smith ("Z Na- tion"), Carlos Arellano ("Our Flag Means Death") and Loren- zo Pozzan ("Nick and Nicky," 2022) also star. WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "Matriarch" (2022) Letting go of the past is never easy, and that goes double in the new British horror film "Matri- arch," premiering Friday, Oct. 21, on Hulu. Afflicted with a myste- rious disease after surviving an overdose, Laura (Jemima Roop- er, "The Girlfriend Experience") returns to her childhood home to confront her personal de- mons and attempt to leave them all in the past. But instead of the cleansing journey she hopes for, Laura discovers a real demon in- stead — and this one isn't quite so willing to let go. From direc- tor and writer Ben Steiner ("Monsterland 2," 2019), "Matri- arch" is a thematic successor to his 2018 short film "Urn." The film also stars Kate Dickie ("The Green Knight," 2021), Sarah Paul ("House of Anubis"), Simon Meacock ("Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald," 2018), Christina Cole ("The Window"), Franc Ashman ("I Came By," 2022), Celinde Schoenmaker ("Rocketman," 2019), Jamie Da- vis ("Casualty"), Stephen DeRo- sa ("Café Society," 2016) and Jay Patel ("Torbaaz," 2020). WHAT'S NEW ON SHUDDER "V/H/S/99" (2022) Y2K takes a sinister turn in the chilling new horror film "V/H/S/99," premiering Thurs- day, Oct. 20, on Shudder. The fifth in the V/H/S franchise of found-footage horror anthology films, "99" witnesses a hellish vi- sion of 1999 as social isolation, analog technology and disturb- ing home video segments weave together a new millennium hor- ror saga like no other, complete with monsters, supernatural surprises and a frightening twist or two. Divided into segments, each with its own story and dis- tinct style, "99's" talented team of filmmakers brings the story to life. The segment "Ozzie's Dun- geon" comes from Flying Lotus ("Kuso," 2017) and Zoe Cooper ("The Airplane Story," 2016), "Shredding" is written and di- rected by Maggie Levin ("Miss 2059"), Tyler MacIntyre ("Trag- edy Girls," 2017) directs and writes "The Gawkers"), "Suicide Bid" comes from Johannes Rob- erts ("Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City," 2021) and "To Hell and Back" is written and direct- ed by Joseph and Vanessa Win- ter (both of "Deadstream," 2022). The film stars Verona Blue ("Bosch"), Janna Bossier ("The Hunter's Anthology"), Arcelaus Crisanto ("A Crafty Christmas Romance," 2020), Brittany Gandy ("All Ameri- can"), Isabelle Hahn ("Jamie," 2020), Cree Kawa ("A Girl Named Jo"), Tyler Lofton ("Love, Victor"), Luke Mullen ("Andi Mack"), Stephanie Ray ("This Is Us"), Logan Riley ("The Prom," 2020) and Melanie Stone ("Deadstream," 2022). WHAT'S NEW ON APPLE TV+ "Ghostwriter" - Season 3 The reimagining of Sesame Workshop's 1992 hit series "Ghostwriter" returns to Apple TV+ Friday, Oct. 21, with its third season. Introducing children to the world of classic literature, this paranormal family series began when a ghost haunting a neighborhood bookstore started releasing fictional characters into the real world. As they worked to keep these newly re- vived characters under control, a group of enterprising kids teamed up to solve the mystery of the ghost's unfinished busi- ness and discover the true iden- tity of the ghostwriter. Now, in Season 3, "Ghostwriter" returns with a new group of brave young people — played by Princess K. Mapp ("The Unicorn"), Nour Assaf ("The Casagrandes") and Daire McLeod ("Danger Force") — as they work to keep the Ghostwriter's mayhem under control and solve the mystery once and for all. Developed for television by J.J. Johnson ("Endlings") and Andrew Oren- stein ("Just Add Magic"), Season 3 is directed by Nimisha Mukerji ("Gabby Duran & The Unsitta- bles"). WHAT'S NEW ON PRIME "Argentina, 1985" (2022) Get swept up in a fight for free- dom in "Argentina, 1985" when the new drama film makes its Prime debut Friday, Oct. 21.
