Inside A Devoted Brotherhood ~ p. 2 Skull & Crossbones Society Members ~ p. 2 Our Legacy Continues ~ p. 3 Chapter Officers ~ p. 3 T E X A S A L P H A s U N I V E R S I T Y O F T E X A S S I G M A P H I E P S I L O N A E CCOLAD G reetings from Texas Alpha! e chapter is up and running with over 50 new members aer a successful summer recruitment. e brothers have a full fall schedule, as usual, and are more than capable of making the most of it. With that said, the chapter continues to perform well academically with an overall GPA of 3.44 and 19 4.0s; that's more than 10% of the chapter! The officers are busy developing fall programming, including study hall for the freshmen as well as career, health, and safety speakers for the whole chapter. As we tell the freshmen every year, the Texas Alpha Educational Foundation will reimburse 50% of any tuition invoice, making it so the boys don't have much of an excuse not to do well! The alumni board regularly met this summer and will continue to be at Friday lunch with the officers every week during the school year. I'm happy to say that our alumni aren't slacking either. One of our own, Tom Dunning '65, is a 2022 recipient of UT's Distinguished Alumnus Award (see the pop out box below). Tom's achievements are detailed in the Texas Exes' announcement of the award at texasexes.org/about-us/ awards/distinguished-alumnus-award-0. Tom is a perfect example of what we want your sons to be, and we congratulate him on this fine and well-deserved award. Finally, football season is here—so come on by and join us for the games! The doors are always open for you at Texas Alpha. HFF, Lynn Butler '88 (512) 345-8339 | hamiltonbutler@gmail.com Nothing But Our Best Brothers Set New Members Up for Success A Distinguished SigEp Alumnus E ach year, Texas Exes chooses up to six UT alumni for the Distinguished Alumnus Award, the university's highest honor. Texas Alpha is honored to see Tom Dunning '65 on that list this year! Tom is chairman emeritus of Lockton Dunning Benefits and the lead independent director of Oncor, the largest electric utility company in Texas. He is also the recipient of Dallas' prestigious Linz Award and was elected to the Dallas Business Hall of Fame. Tom and his wife, Sally, endowed a Forty Acres Scholarship for a student in the Steve Hicks School of Social Work, where Tom serves on the advisory council. Congratulations, Tom! Alumni Reunite through Spring Happy Hours T his past May, Texas Alpha brothers across the state participated in a series of happy hours to renew decades-old friendships over drinks, tell stories, and remember what it's like to get together again as brothers. It was a long time since any organized alumni events in the wake of the pandemic, and we were all very excited to see each other face to face. HOUSTON First up, brothers from the early 1960s all the way to recent graduates were in attendance at Memorial Trail Ice House, although it was a little warmer than we had hoped. John Tyler '63 and Hensel Murchison '61 kept the rest of us feeling young, and John filled me in on the history of doing these local happy hours—they've been in fashion since the early 1980s! Despite having to listen to my spiel about the foundation, everyone in attendance enjoyed their evening. AUSTIN Hosted at the venerable Z'Tejas, Texas Alpha legends, as well as many new faces, were in attendance. There were even some folks that made their first appearance in many years (I'm looking at you Ryan Brueckner '07). Great thanks to Joey Leak '06, Jerry Smith '79, Lynn Butler '88, and the whole Austin crew for organizing. Mark Kiester '71 said his favorite part of the evening was reconnecting with Jack Savage '74 for the first time in over 40 years—an opportunity that probably doesn't happen outside of an event like this. DALLAS Last up was the Dallas crew at the Park House, who have by far led the longest- standing Texas Alpha happy hour among the major metros. Credit goes to Dax Seale '96, Kent Casey '86, Steve Shipley '90, Cullen Aderhold '76, John Hardaway '02, Cullen Aderhold Jr. '02, and many others that have kept it going over the years. With over 60 attendees, this was our largest gathering. Congratulations! DID WE MISS YOU? To those who couldn't make it, please know you were missed. If you didn't get the invitation, please update your contact information by completing the biographical update included in this newsletter or email updatemyrecord@penningtonco.com. If your town did not host a happy hour and you think it should, please reach out to me or another board member directly; the door is always open. HFF, Greg Barra '03 gregbarra@gmail.com Alumni trying to stay cool in Houston! Ryan Brueckner '07, Jerry Smith '79, and Mark Kiester '71 at the Austin Happy Hour. More than 60 alumni showed up for the Dallas event! FALL 2022
