September 25 - October 1, 2022 WHATS UP! T11 that supposed to be the same character? A: Brace yourself, because this goes deep: there was once a con- spiracy among pretty much all of television to get Det. (and lat- er Sgt.) John Munch, always played by Richard Belzer, in as many shows as possible. Munch, the grouchy and somewhat world-weary New York cop who delighted in just this sort of conspiracy theory for 17 years on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," actually started out on a different show. A few times on "SVU" he men- tioned his time back in Balti- more — that's a reference to the birth of the character on the groundbreakingly gritty proce- dural "Homicide: Life on the Street." It was towards the end of that show's run that he appeared on "The X-Files" — an episode set partly in Baltimore. Eight more TV shows fol- lowed, giving Munch the record for the biggest number of TV crossover appearances in histo- ry (blowing past Norm and Cliff from "Cheers"). If you think Munch's "X-Files" appearance was weird, look up his turns on sitcoms "30 Rock" and "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt." And then, if you think you're ready, watch him on "Ses- ame Street," doing a bit called "Law & Order: Special Letters Unit." That's how deep this con- spiracy goes. Kidding aside, Belzer himself is actually a well-known con- spiracy theorist. He's written whole books on the subject, in- cluding "UFOs, JFK, and Elvis: Conspiracies You Don't Have to Be Crazy to Believe" and "Some- one Is Hiding Something: What Happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370?" And with John Munch draw- ing mysterious links between seemingly unconnected shows across decades, Belzer's at the heart of a conspiracy of his very own. (OK, I'm kidding again.) Q: What is Sandra Oh doing now that "Killing Eve" is over? A:Her award-winning run as the title character on the hit ac- tion-drama "Killing Eve" put Sandra Oh in a position to pick her roles, and she's made some bold choices. Starring in a big-screen come- dy? Yes. Doing a prestige fantasy drama based on an acclaimed book? Yep. Continuing to dabble in the superhero genre? That, too. She's currently in production on "The Tiger's Apprentice," an animated drama based on the acclaimed children's book of the same name. It's due out in Janu- ary 2024. She also recently wrapped filming on an untitled road trip comedy film alongside Awkwa- fina ("Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," 2021). That one's due out sometime next year on the Hulu streaming ser- vice (and on Disney+ in Cana- da). In between all that, Oh found time to continue her supporting voice role on the superhero- themed animated series "Invin- cible." The new season is due out this fall. That's a broad range of roles, but they also all seem like a lot of fun — not a bad way to celebrate the end of a hit series. "Killing Eve" ran for four sea- sons on AMC, and prior to that, Oh was a staple on "Grey's Anat- omy" for 10 seasons and 220 epi- sodes. She's earned a bit of vari- ety. Have a question? Advance Pest Control 2 x 2 TAKE 5 BY ADAM THOMLISON TV Media Q: When is David Mamet going to do another movie? "Glengarry Glen Ross" is still one of the best films ever, in my opinion. A: You're not alone in your es- teem for the great writer and di- rector David Mamet. His stage and screen accomplishments mean that he's in a position to wait around for the right project to come along. And guess what? It just came along, so your question is well- timed. After nearly 15 years away from the big screen (his last Hol- lywood film was 2008's "Red- belt"), Mamet has signed on to direct and co-write a movie about one of America's greatest real-life mysteries: the JFK as- sassination and, in particular, the possibility of Mafia involve- ment. "2 days, 1963," which is cur- rently in pre-production, is based on a script by Nicholas Celozzi ("Quiet Kill," 2004), the great-nephew of Sam Giancana — a real-life mobster who (50-year-old spoiler alert) will feature in the film's story. That's the sort of script that can grab the attention of even the pickiest filmmaker. Want to know how excited Mamet is about it? He compared it to one of the greatest films of all time. "Nick [Celozzi] wrote and sent me this script, and it's a helluva script," Mamet told Deadline.com. "Really inside stuff, similar to what Francis Coppola did with Mario Puzo in 'The Godfather.'" For fans, of course, it's excit- ing enough to just have Mamet get behind the camera again. He gave us, as you say, one of the great workplace dramas with 1992's "Glengarry Glen Ross," a film whose screenplay he wrote, based on his hit stage play. Indeed, he's actually better known for his writing than his directing, though he has helmed some greats, including 2000's "State and Main" and 1987's "House of Games." Q: I saw Richard Belzer, who played John Munch on "Law & Order: SVU," in an episode of "The X-Files," and I think they called him Munch there as well.
