Hindu mantras open Redding City Council Redding City Council, incorporated in 1887, had its first historic Hindu invocation on July 16 evening, containing verses from world's oldest existing scripture. Hindu statesman Rajan Zed delivered the invocation from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before the City Council. After Sanskrit delivery, he then read the English translation of the prayer. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and root language of Indo-European languages. Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, recited from Rig-Veda, the oldest scripture of the world still in common use, besides lines from Upanishads and Bhagavad-Gita (Song of the Lord), both ancient Hindu scriptures. He started and ended the prayer with "Om", the mystical syllable containing the universe, which in Hinduism is used to introduce and conclude religious work. Reciting from Brahadaranyakopanishad, Rajan Zed said, "Asato ma sad gamaya, Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya, Mrtyor mamrtam gamaya", which he then translated as "Lead me from the unreal to the Real, Lead me from darkness to Light, and Lead me from death to Immortality." Reciting from Bhagavad-Gita, he urged councilmembers to keep the welfare of others always in mind. Councilmembers, city employees and public were seen standing in prayer mode with their heads bowed down during this invocation. Wearing saffron colored attire, a ruddraksh mala (rosary), and traditional sandalpaste tilak (religious mark) on the forehead, Zed sprinkled few drops of water from river Ganga of India, considered holy by Hindus, around the podium before the prayer. Zed presented a copy of Bhagavad-Gita to Mayor Rick Bosetti, who introduced and thanked Zed. "It is a historic moment of pride for the community when the prayers from ancient Sanskrit scriptures are being read in this great hall of democracy of this great city of Redding," Zed stated before starting the invocation. Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal. There are about 3 million Hindus in USA. &Worship God is love. Therefore love is still available for any soul that desires God. Jesus spoke the message clearly when he said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me" (John 14:6 NLT). God's love is always available to us, through His son Jesus – the only begotten Son of God. People everywhere are discussing the condition of our world today. Many opinions are voiced about the United States. People are in turmoil, in unrest, in depression, in fear, and even our youth are wondering if they have a future. Many wonder where God is now. He has never left, but we have. We live in a time for serious and sincere contemplation. What's going on? Why does everything seem "upside down and backwards?" Leadership in our country makes choices that seem to appear from the mind of a five year old. Yet, most of our leaders are highly educated and intelligent people. Have they lost their minds? No. They have lost their way. Our nation has forgotten God. We have created our own gods. We have been so busy serving our created gods that we have abandoned the One true and living God! We have traded Him for the god of materialism, god of self-satisfaction, god of pride, god of false religions, god of sexual impurity, god of lust filled thinking, god of intellectual superiority, and the list is endless. Left to ourselves we develop into people of depraved minds. Biblical history clearly paints this picture. When mankind turns away from God He eventually leaves us to our own ways. This truth is clearly ness of this hour in history. Many are like children playing explained in Romans, with their toys, while all chapter one. Martin GodTalk Church to offer Bible reading campaign The Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff, 838 Jefferson St., is getting ready to launch a Bible reading campaign this fall. "A Gallup survey has reported that the average American household has four Bibles," said the Rev. Beth Hoyt. "However research has also found that very few of us have read the entire Bible, and only 16 percent of Americans read even a little bit of the Bible every day. As Christians, this is the book upon which we base our faith. It is time to find out what it really has to say. So we are going to do just that, beginning Sept. 8 and finishing in May." The Presbyterian Church is going to use The Story as a guide through scripture. The Story is a unique program providing 31 weeks of curriculum for children, teens and adults, and 31 weeks of corresponding sermons. The Story is 31 chapters of carefully-selected scriptures sequenced in chrono- logical order, and presents the word of God in an engaging format, reading like a novel. The church is going to give the appropriate edition of The Story to children and youth who decide to share in this 31 week adventure, and is making inexpensive copies of the adult edition available for purchase as well. A discussion group for adults at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays will provide a place to share what is being learned. The Presbyterian Church welcomes any from the community who might like to join for this journey. There is no pressure to become a long-term member of the church. "Just come for nine months to read the Bible and find out what the Christian faith is all about," Hoyt said. "In the fall Sunday School begins at 9:30 a.m. and worship follows at 11 a.m. For more information give us a call at 5270372."
