e Washington Alpha Delt 7 S ince the beginning of COVID-19, lives have changed, activities have been canceled, and the overall way of life has been different. e same is true for Greek life; it was only a little more than a year ago that school was cut short and all activities came to a halt. When it came time, recruitment was held virtually, and Brothers stayed in contact through technology. Now, as Alpha Delta Phi is back in full swing, there's one man who continue to ensure the safety of others amidst the pandemic: Ryan Shimizu '23. Ryan served as the Washington Chapter Risk Manager—during the pandemic. His decision to take on this role came down to wanting to give back to the house. "e guys in this house have taught me so many invaluable life lessons that have played a huge role in shaping me into the man I am today," Ryan said. "I want to be someone who underclassmen can go to for anything and to hold a position where I can pass on the life lessons I've learned to the incoming pledge classes." Ryan's duties include managing event safety teams, remaining on call for possible medical emergencies, and organizing the fraternity's COVID-19 protocol in the case of an outbreak. His main duty is to ensure the mental and physical health of all members as well as their safety and compliance of rules at events. "When the pandemic hit our house during the winter and spring quarters, organizing tests for members while enforcing strict, 10-day quarantines was a stressful process," Ryan said. "Some of our protocols included wearing masks everywhere except one's own room, ensuring that healthy members delivered meals to the door of quarantined members, and keeping track of all the COVID-19 test dates of active members." While the task of keeping more than 70 fraternity Brothers safe is daunting, Ryan finds it to be one of the most rewarding challenges, as his Brothers always have his back to make it more enjoyable. Chapter President Logen Gendron '22 and the rest of the executive council have been his greatest source of support when his position gets overwhelming. Ryan in the photo above, received the Outstanding Chapter Risk Management Award for 2020-21 at the 189th Alpha Delta Phi Convention in Austin, Texas last summer. Supporting Brothers During Tough Times for A Winning Outcome Ryan Shimizu '23 Explains His Role as Risk Manager Former Risk Manager Nicky Swedin '22 set Ryan up with procedures to follow that would guide him in his role. His favorite procedure involves organizing and teaching an event safety team, which is comprised of members of all pledge classes, who are expected to look out for and maintain the safety of all members attending social events. "When I see members of the house coming to the aid of other Brothers in need, it fills me with pride that our strong sense of brotherhood will continue on." Outside of his position as risk manager, Ryan is a member of the UW Boxing Team and the Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity. He is a political science major and is interested in pursuing a career in law or HR management. He has many enjoyable memories of traveling with his Brothers, whether it be at their Vancouver formal or their summer trip to the Vantage Dunes, and moments on these trips will always hold a special place in Ryan's heart.
