Anchored In Delta Gamma at the University of Kansas Fall 2021 inside: Alumna Spotlight p.2 • Alumnae Updates p. 2 • Doing Good Across Campus p. 3 • New Members p. 4 RENOVATIONS WORTH WAITING FOR Help Protect 1015 Emery I joined Delta Gamma in the fall of 2011. At the time, I was an adventurous young woman from Minnesota who wanted to join Greek life to find a strong group of friends. As I look back on that time 10 years later, I realize Delta Gamma has given me so much more than I could have hoped for. Our home at 1015 Emery was where I met three of my best friends—who were recently bridesmaids at my wedding. It's also where I learned the meaning of hard work as I juggled leadership roles with extracurriculars while pursuing my business degree. Most importantly, ΔΓ was where I experienced how rewarding it is to be a part of something so much bigger than yourself. Over the past four years, I've been privileged to work closely with Beta Kappa's amazing collegians, dedicated advisors, and the House Corporation Board to carry on Delta Gamma's legacy since its colonization in 1940. As president of the board, I led a bedroom renovation to transform the second and third floors. Our goal was to create a modern suite-like experience for the women, including lounge areas available for them to unwind. When we initially embarked on this project back in 2018, we were excited to get started but soon realized a renovation of this size needed to be carefully, financially planned. Although there was eagerness surrounding the project, we decided to make the responsible choice to postpone another year to reserve the necessary funds. Unfortunately, in November of 2019, a pipe burst on the third floor, dropping thousands of gallons of water and causing more than $80,000 worth of damage to the property. The board had to temporarily place women into campus housing while a crew repaired the rooms that had been impacted. Although it was a difficult situation, the women of Delta Gamma prevailed; together, the house was restored. We had planned to start the renovation in the summer of 2020 but were then met with difficulties surrounding COVID-19. Not only did this greatly impact the women's experience living in the house, but it also left us with a lack of inventory and uncertainty regarding potential regulations. It was an unprecedented time, and ultimately, we decided to take a conservative approach to postpone the renovation for a second time. After all these obstacles stood in our way, we were finally able to start construction for the first half of the bedrooms starting May 2021. The results were fantastic, and the women loved the new setup. Although we are only 50% complete, the board feels confident that this type of momentum is what Delta Gamma requires to remain competitive on campus. My time as president of the House Corporation hasn't always been smooth sailing, but I'll never regret the opportunity to give back. A new lounge area for sisters to relax and unwind together. As alumna, rallying behind Beta Kappa has never been more important than it is today. Each generation has the responsibility to protect our legacy, and my ask to all of you is to find a way to connect back to ΔΓ. This could be accomplished through volunteering as an advisor or board member, assisting financially with a donation to finish the renovation, or simply stopping by the house the next time you're in town to share your personal memories. 1015 Emery will always be your home, and we invite you to experience the renovation first-hand. We hope to see you soon!
