4 L uca Berrone '75 E-1201 traveled from Italy to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1974 after receiving a scholarship to be a foreign exchange student for a year. He made the most of his time and embraced the culture, thinking he was headed back to Italy in a year. He joined his classmates in visiting Iowa State, and the Director of Admissions, who was originally from Italy, started a campaign to lobby him to attend Iowa State. He and his friends went through recruitment, and Luca was enamored by Tau Kappa Epsilon and the wonderful people he met in the fraternity. Luca had a rewarding and enriching experience in the Chapter House, and he enjoyed the simple moments with his Fraters. He enjoyed learning about their lives, history, where they were from, and how each of them shaped the TKE house. "I was exposed to a whole different facet of college life that I probably otherwise would not have had an opportunity to experience. It really afforded me a much better and well-rounded experience than if I were to have lived in a dorm or apartment." Luca has many memories of his time in the Chapter. He had the opportunity to learn and exchange ideas, and he enjoyed sharing cultural differences between Italy and the United States. He is proud to support Epsilon Chapter as a donor to the Securing Epsilon's Legacy campaign, and he encourages others to do the same. "I want to maintain that opportunity that was afforded to me and others and inspire youth as they attend college," he said. "My experience within Epsilon was truly rewarding and enriching, and I would encourage others to take a look at their experience and how it has enriched their own lives." During his time in Iowa, Luca became friends with Xi Jinping of China. In 1983, he worked for the governor of Iowa to organize and coordinate the Iowa Sister States Organization, which was geared toward fostering Iowa's international relationships. He hosted a delegation for two weeks in 1985, the leader being none other than future President of the FOSTERING RELATIONSHIPS How Tau Kappa Epsilon Enriched the Life of Luca Berrone '75 E-1201 Luca Berrone '75 E-1201 and his wife, Margaret, with President Xi Jinping's delegation in 1985. They created a friendly bond, and in 2012, when President Xi had his first official visit to the United States, he went back to Iowa and requested that Luca spend time with him. Since then, Luca has visited President Xi in China and was honored when the president of Italy invited him to help host Xi Jinping in March of 2019. In his personal life, Luca is a partner with an Italian firm that sells industrial equipment for a variety of manufacturing fields from ceramic tile to chocolate-making equipment. Some of the life lessons he learned from TKE helped prepare him for his business. Luca met his wife at Iowa State, and she and their son play integral parts in the business. They also have a daughter and two grandsons. Luca enjoys telling his family stories about his fraternity experience. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, gardening, and watching sports. He remains involved with the Iowa Sister State Organization.
