THE CHIMES Epsilon Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon Iowa State University P.O. Box 442100 Lawrence, KS 66044-2100 Address Service Requested IN MEMORY OF OUR FALLEN FRATERS P lease help us remember and honor the following Tekes who are now members of our Chapter Eternal. Rest well, Fraters. When Fraters Got the Shaft at ISU Jim Olberding '58 E-665 Shares Significance of VEISHEA Float E ver think you've been given the shaft? Well, the lads at 224 Ash were in May of 1962, and they have a trophy to prove it! A Purple Shaft, by gum and by golly. It's been more than 50 years. It's like it was yesterday to a few of us who were there. The Tekes constructed the Ben Hur float that year with the ladies from Alpha Chi Omega. It was a beautiful rendition of the 1959 Oscar Academy- winning movie starring Charlton Heston riding a chariot pulled by four white chargers. The float was stunning. So much so that a photograph of the float appeared on the front page of The Des Moines Register on the following Sunday, ABOVE THE FOLD! Everyone knew it was the winner. The people along the parade route stood and applauded. It was almost magical to see the reaction. That Saturday night, Ron Ewing '58 E-654, from Farley, Iowa, and the architect of the project, led a contingent of Fraters to the Great Hall in Memorial Union for the presentation of the trophies. They announced the third, second, and first place winners—but no Tau Kappa Epsilon. Great! That meant we'd won the Sweepstakes Trophy, then. But no. Another fraternity was awarded the prize. The late Ron Ewing was crushed, and so were others, notably Charlie Ash '60 E-709 and Sam Reynolds '60 E-715, two of the "Waterloo Trio" (the other being Rusty Hanna '60 E-706). The "mechanical section" of the float was under the auspices of Charlie and Sam. The 1950 Packard (what a great automobile) was located by Charlie for the low price of $35. It was stripped to a bare chassis. The artistic work was Ron's bailiwick. The other Fraters and ladies from Alpha Chi Omega provided the labor for paper mâché, paint, and other accoutrements. Approximately a week later, the ladies from Chi Omega appeared on the lawn with a serenade and presented the Chapter with the Purple Shaft Trophy, which Ron accepted on behalf of Epsilon (a duplicate was given to the ladies of Alpha Chi Omega). It was fitting that the 1963 Bomb (the now-extinct Iowa State yearbook) featured a full-page photograph in the VEISHEA section of the Ben Hur float with the caption, "PURPLE SHAFT" in large type. Everyone except some hide-bound judges knew who really had the outstanding VEISHEA float. For many years thereafter, Epsilon won the VEISHEA Sweepstakes.
