Welcome, New Members! along with other clubs and activities truly set you up for success. 4. It's fine if you're not friends with everyone—that's just life. Still, have a little mutual respect for your peers because it goes a long way. 5. Don't take life too seriously; life is much more enjoyable when you have an easy heart. During Kayla's sophomore year, she switched into the flight program at Purdue, and her sisters encouraged her to apply for an internship with United. On her second attempt, she received the opportunity to attend United Airlines Flight Training Center in Denver, Colorado, spent the summer there and fell in love with the company. A year and a half later, a mentor reached out to Kayla and led her toward a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: her first job post-college as a flight instructor for Lufthansa in Phoenix, Arizona. A little over two years later, she was back at United as a pilot. The process required hard work and a little bit of luck. "Initially, being a female in a male-dominated industry was intimidating. Now that I've been flying for 11-plus years, I've grown to embrace my role and try to encourage any female in the same position to do the same!" COVID-19 presented its challenges for Kayla, both professionally and personally, as countries started shutting down and traveling was strongly advised against. Kayla and her husband were also in the middle of the process of getting his green card, but with government agencies shut down, it was difficult to pass along critical information. While March through October of 2020 was a rollercoaster, everything has worked out for Kayla. Kayla is proud of many parts of her professional and personal life, her most notable is the relationship she has with her husband, Andreas. She loves staying connected with Alpha Beta and looks forward to phone calls with sisters or visits with her flight benefits. Life Lessons from Alpha Beta (Continued from page 1) Bid Day ends in big smiles and lots of bonds created.
