TUESDAY, JULY 2 Red Bluff 3A The art of consignment shopping Everything I know about buying and selling clothes on consignment I owe to my friend Kathleen, a remarkably welldressed woman. She shops in consignment stores located in upscale areas. And, boy, can she dress. She's a consignment seller, too. I've known Kathleen to buy an outfit from one of her favorite consignment stores for a special occasion, then turn around and sell it back into consignment the next day. See what I mean? She's very clever. The consignment process is simple. If you are a seller, the store sets its criteria for accepting merchandise, and sets the price -- usually 50 percent of the new retail price. Expect a consignment shop to have very high standards for what they will accept: Must be a current style, must be brought in clean and must have no visible wear, holes or stains. Now your items will be put on the sales floor and displayed for 30 to 60 days. Once sold you will receive 30 to 50 percent of the purchase price depending on that store's policy. Recently I have fallen in love with an online consignment store, ThredUp, that specializes in children's clothing. I recently stopped by with my 3-year old grandson, Eli, in mind. "This costs taxpayers money and pulls personnel from other projects." Possessing, discharging or using any kind of firework or pyrotechnic device is prohibited on all national forests. Those found to have caused a wildfire through negligent actions could be billed for the cost of wildfire suppression. "Even as fire precaution levels become higher, we want people to go out and enjoy their forests," Coots continued. "Just do it responsibly and safely." While campfires in designated areas are still allowed on the Klamath National Forest, some state and local departments are instituting burn bans. Check with Forest, State or local agencies for current fire restrictions. Check the Klamath National Forest Website a t http://www.fs.usda.gov/ klamath for changing fire restrictions in the near future. Klamath National Forest Fire Prevention Technicians recommend the following campfire safety precautions: • Always abide by local campfire laws. • Only adults should build and maintain campfires. • Never leave a campfire unattended. • Find a shady spot away from dry logs, branches, bushes, needles or leaves. • Make sure there are no overhanging tree branches near the fire. • Use existing firerings where it is safe to do so. Don't build firerings in roads. • If needed, scoop a small hole down to mineral soil in the center of the pit. Set this material aside, and replace it in the ring when the fire is totally out before leaving the area. • Place rocks if available around pit. When finished put rocks back where they were found. • Keep campfire rings small and use wood no bigger than the ring. • Keep tents and other burnable materials away from the fire. • Fires can often creep along the ground slowly burning roots and dead leaves. Days later, the smoldering fire could break out into a real wildfire. • When leaving, make sure your fire is dead out. Very carefully feel all sticks and charred remains. Feel the coals and ashes. Make sure no roots are smoldering. • Drown the campfire with water and stir charred material. • If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to leave.
