We know how it feels, how it responds to conditions and what is normal behavior for our beloved form of transportation. We rely on our vehicles in Nor Cal because we don't have a lot of public transportation options should our vehicles be out of commission. We need to know that when we put the key into the ignition, things are going to go as planned and the car will start. I have been plagued by car issues this month. In one month, I have replaced a water pump, battery and two tires on one vehicle, a battery on another which now has a check engine light on- oh and did I mention, that car is only one year oldand am about to put four new tires on one of the kids' cars. Needless to say, I am a little overwhelmed on the car repair scale. I was headed out of town in my truck to move a load of furniture to my daughters apartment in Sacramento and something didn't smell right. As I said, we know our vehicles and we know when something changes in their status. So, I took the loaded truck to Growney's so they could smell it. I mean, that was the best way I could convey what I knew was wrong with the truck. Turns out everything was fine, except one thing. The load my daughter and I had packed needed them back for the sale. some help. The calls claim to be from various well-known medical alert service providers, but the providers contend the calls are not originating from them. Free offers often fail to disclose conditions and can lead to unauthorized charges." In California, calls made via automatic dialing-announcing devices, or "robo-calls" are only legal when the recipient is already a member or client of the company or organization initiating the phone call, or if an emergency system is contacting you regarding an emergency situation. In other cases, these calls are acceptable if a live person announces the nature of the call, the contact information for the company represented and obtains consent from the person called to hear the prerecorded message. Better Business Bureau offers the following suggestions when receiving unsolicited phone calls: • Remember that prerecorded calls in California are typically not lawful. • Check the background of any company before doing business with them. • Get the specifics. The Federal Trade Commission requires free offers disclose all terms and conditions of the offer. • Take your time in making a decision. Watch for salespeople who claim an offer is only good today. • Keep a record of the number on your caller ID, hang up and discuss the purchase with a friend or family member. Be wary of doing business with someone calling from a blocked number. • Do not give credit card or Medicare numbers to callers you do not know. • If you think the call is illegal, file a complaint with your telephone company and the FTC.
