The dichotomy between repen- tance and retribution operates the same way as that between covenants of life and covenants of death. The former always lead their participants into freedom, community, and life itself. This was true for the Old Covenant – in which God led the Hebrew people out of captivity, into a land in which they could serve Him as a holy nation, and into long life and prosper- ity as they obeyed His commandments. It was just as true – and in the same way – for the New Covenant. It too was bought in blood and offered freedom from sin, a community of the redeemed, and eternal and abundant life to those who entered into it. Jim Wilson GodTalk The latter always lead their participants into bondage, isola- tion, and death itself. This was true in the Bible for the army of Saul when they covenanted to take no food – on pain of death – until they had destroyed the Philistine army. When Jonathan staggered into camp – having eaten nothing all day and knowing nothing of the covenant – he was nearly killed after taking a mouth- ful of honey. The men and their king realized at the last moment that it was their covenant that transgressed the Law of God, not the eating of the honey. It was the same in the Book of Acts when a band of forty Jewish men made covenant to fast until they had killed Paul. They too were foiled because God does not honor covenants of death; nor will He honor retribution. When I was 14 years old I was the victim of an act of identifica- tional retribution. A Hispanic boy who attended the same junior high school as I did approached me after school on the school grounds. He hit me in the stomach as hard as he could and for no other reason than that I was Anglo. For many years I nourished a dislike and distrust of Hispanic people as a group; I did not even remember why I felt that way because I had forgotten the incident. When God brought it to mind one day – as He confronted me about my prejudicial attitude – He did not guilt or shame me for my racism. He simply told me that the only way to be healed was to repent of the shame I still carried over the inci- dent that happened in 1962. When I repented I was immediately set free. The antidote to identifica- tional retribution is repentance – whether on an individual or corpo- rate basis. It is the same with covenant. Covenant of death – like the one between the Hebrews and the Egyptians that God broke through Moses – are addressable only through the introduction of a covenant of life – like the one brought through Moses. California is divided along regional lines – among other things. The southerners have the money and the political power that goes with the lion’s share of the population. We northerners have the water and other natural resources that abound in our part of the state. We waste a great deal of time hating (rejecting) the peo- ple of the southern region. Our resentment is not without histori- Groups influencing Judaism CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Small groups of mostly young Jewish adults are gathering more often in independent groups that they say allow them to experience prayer in a more open way. Gatherings of some groups, called ‘‘minyan’’ in Hebrew, include some ideas that break traditional rules on the involvement of women. Dozens of these unaffiliated Jewish worship com- munities have sprung up in the past decade, mixing elements of the mainstream denominations while answering to none of them. cal reason; but it remains a waste of time and energy. It was my privilege to participate in a gath- ering in Southern California a few years back. When it was my turn to speak I found myself identify- ing myself as a representative of the Body in Northern California – for so I was. I went on to say that we blessed our brothers and sis- ters of the other region, and then I offered the testimony for which I had been given the microphone. When the host pastor recovered the microphone after everyone had spoken who was called to it, he began to weep. He said, "That man from Northern California blessed us, and all we have ever done is take their water. We need to repent and we need to begin that process now." That event in 2003 began a series of exhange visits between teachers and other leaders between the regions that still goes on today. It has impacted the state in ways often undetected by people who live in its various parts – except that we receive the benefit of a new sense of community. The pas- tor engaged in identificational repentance in his way, and I did it in mine. Any time we engage in repentance at this level we become the gift of God in the way of Daniel and Nehemiah. More importantly, we become His ambassadors, as Jesus did in the ultimate act of repentance on the Cross.
