Journee Privette and Garrett Brockman, both holding a specially made plaque, were promoted to black belt 1st degree in the PAL Jujutsu program on Thursday, July 29. Journee has been train- ing for this day for more than six years - she's ten years old. Garrett started before he entered Red Bluff High School. He graduated with the 2010 class and is leaving for the Navy soon. Special large diplomas were presented to both of them. They were also presented with their black belt with their names sewn on by American Embroidery on Antelope Boulevard. Several others were promoted to blue belt and one was promoted to green belt after taking their respective test. Pete Sorano donated the plaques to both of the new black belts. Ginger's Fitness Palace donates the training space to PAL. Ginger's Zumba classes are posted on the door. Jujutsu classes are held each Monday and Thurs- day from 3 to 5:15 p.m. at Ginger's Fitness Palace on Madison Street. These classes are more about conquering life rather than an opponent. The style of Jujutsu is the "Art of Standing Your Ground" (against drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gangs and vio- lence) but they do learn self-defense against attacks by bullies. Good school grades are a must in order to earn belt rankings. Classes are free year round for kids and teens who are in school. Anyone who is interested in the program should either visit the PAL web site at www.tehamacountyso.org or just stop by on Mon- days or Thursdays for more information. Temperatures scamper through the degrees often climbing to the 100 plus degree mark. Such was a wedding held at the First Christian Church in Red Bluff fifty-six years ago. The reception following the wedding was held in the parlor room on the West side of the church. It was Hot! The wedding cake frosting began to melt as the sun bore down through the beautiful stained glass window, the bride and groom atop the cake began to slide to the side of the cake. It was rescued by an Aunt of the bride. The wedding was unique com- plete with best men, bridesmaids, flower girls and ring bearers. Songs were sung, Marriage vows exchanged and KBLF Radio recorded the ceremony to be broad- cast throughout Tehama County. It was broadcast; the sound of a train traveling on the tracks next to the church could be heard clearly. Needless to say KBLF gave up on their project of recording future weddings. The bride and groom changed into honeymoon travel clothes after the reception and pic- tures, and then headed for the car loaned to them by the bride's par- ents. The couple proceeded to head out of town on highway 99. Cars were following the happy couple, blowing horns to catch the attention of the public toward the honey- mooners. Suddenly the car motor came to a halt and the groom steered the vehicle toward the side of the high- way. The caravan of follow- ers parked their cars and proceeded to try to give help. Getting the car to start was impossible so one of the couples following the newly wedded couple offered their 1950s Ford to the bride and groom so that they could con- tinue their honeymoon to the coast. The month and the year? July 30, 1954. Will You Love Me When I'm Old? I would ask of you, my darling, A question soft and low, That gives me many a heartache As the moments come and go. Your love I know is truthful, But the truest love grows cold; It is this that I would ask you: Will you love me when I'm old? Down the stream of life together We are sailing side by side, Hoping some bright day to anchor. Safe beyond the surging tide. Today our sky is cloudless, But the night my clouds unfold; Will you love me when I'm old? When my hair shall shade the snowdrift, And mine eyes shall dimmer grow, I would lean upon some loved one, Through the valley as Carolyn Barber I go. I would claim of you a promise, Worth to me a world of gold; It is only this, my darling, That you'll love me when I'm old. Unknown Author Happy 56th Anniversary Hurley! Remember, "Young love is a flame, very hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. The love of the older and disciplined heart is as coals, deep-burning, unquench- able." Henry Ward Beecher Let us head for our annual anniversary trip to the coast and beyond. Love ya! Carolyn Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992.
