"When we were pledges in 1983, our pledge educator, Doug Bland '84, made it clear that you get out of the Fraternity what you put into it. After graduation, since I was staying in Manhattan, I stepped up to help the men of SigEp. I continue to stay involved because of the joy and excitement you feel with each new class. The spirit of Kansas Beta is alive and well, and I know many brothers will accept our challenge of getting involved with their time or treasure." - Dirk Daveline '87, AVC Treasurer THE MISSION STATEMENT FOR OUR SECOND CENTURY I n the last decade, Kansas Beta's strength has ebbed and flowed. Our main goal through this campaign is to steady our Chapter by targeting strategic facility and experience investments. We have selected the following mission statement to guide our Alumni Volunteer Corporation and active brotherhood: "Through alumni involvement and active member input, we will create a learning atmosphere for men of diverse backgrounds. They will become lifelong leaders in business, family, and community through the teachings of the Balanced Man Program and alumni mentoring. We will invigorate the structure and culture with the standards that brought us all together as young men. This will be the future of Kansas Beta and, just as those before us, it is our obligation to pay it forward." Additionally, we are committed to the following focuses and immediate steps to enact this mission: The Balanced Man Scholarship is a tool SigEp chapters can use to help develop a strong list of potential new members. The scholarship will be offered to outstanding high school seniors who share the values of the Balanced Man Program. Kansas Beta will advertise and reach out to high schools and areas we want to recruit from to develop a strong group of applicants. Through the interviews in the scholarship process, outstanding candidates will be identified, and the recruitment chairmen can follow up appropriately. An awards banquet will be held, serving as a tremendous opportunity to include parents, alumni, volunteers, and university administration in the recruitment process while recognizing applicants and current brothers for academic achievements. WHAT IS THE BALANCED MAN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM? Recruitment If we get the best men in, we will have the best Kansas Beta. To do so, we need to create programs and standards that attract the best members. 1. Recruit only a certain number of students from a single high school to improve Chapter diversity. 2. Establish clear guidelines to recruit from, including high school GPA, class rank, ACT score, community involvement, and leadership characteristics. 3. Utilize the Balanced Man Scholarship program to identify outstanding young men and recruit them as members Meaningful Alumni Involvement The best chapters on our campus have engaged alumni volunteers, and Kansas Beta will be no different. • We all remember an older member or alumnus who helped us reach our potential. During COVID-19, we had success advising virtually and are moving forward with remote advising opportunities to provide mentoring, guidance, and coaching to brothers, in addition to on-site support in Manhattan. • If you are interested, or know of someone who is interested, please reach out to Dirk Daveline at dirkdaveline@gmail.com. We are asking for only an hour of your time and are looking for mentors in these fields: medicine, sales, finance, entrepreneurship, engineering, and management.
