many hands, one heart
W
ith the Seattle Winter having passed, we've now emerged
into the hopes of rejuvenation of Spring and Summer. It
is great news that AD Phi at Washington functions in this
time at its usual high level. Most of you know by now that the Chapter
was temporarily located at the leased former DU facility. While it isn't
the most ideal building, it has served us very well in avoiding a total
shut down of the Chapter during the remodel.
e greatest challenge—the pandemic—did a lot to change how
undergraduates functioned this past academic year. All large social
events were banned, all classes were held remotely, the facility was
under lockdown for COVID-19 control. Ongoing testing was done to
prevent virus outbreaks, there was mask wearing in all common areas,
and recently a mandatory edict from the University for vaccination
of all students. Yes, we did have some positive COVID-19 cases this
Winter. However, this was handled by quarantining those who were
exposed. We survived this challenge because of the mature leadership
of our Chapter president and the EC and the total cooperation of the
Chapter. It is amazing what our young Brothers have withstood! Be
proud of these young men!
ere is now much to reflect upon moving forward. We have come a
long way since the beginning of our Many Hands ,One Heart campaign
to finance the remodel and rebuild of the 100-year-old building. Our
original goal was to raise $5 million to make the dream a reality. To
date we have just crossed over $4.3 million. To secure the loan from
Coastal Community Bank, it was necessary to restructure the budget
by cutting items that would not prevent a certificate of occupancy in
January of 2022.
Now is the time to put those items back into the budget—this
includes furniture throughout the facility, some kitchen items, the
security system, plus high-speed internet capacity. As is the case
when remodeling most older structures, the contractors discovered
"structural contingencies" that weren't known or included in the
original budget. e net result of all this is the need to raise additional
funds to meet the goal of a top-quality Chapter House. We need an
additional $700,000 to cover these unplanned expenses. Many Hands,
One Heart and the Built to Last campaign make such a goal possible.
Take a moment to consider what you can do at whatever level is
comfortable for you. ere are some 450 living Brothers who haven't
participated in the campaign. at combined with a potential
willingness of current donors to add to their contributions makes us
confident that we can meet our goal rapidly.
Bard Furber '86, his brother, PJ Furber '84, and the Built to Last
Committee have devoted significant time and effort in organizing
the effort to raise what is needed to complete the project. is effort
includes opportunities for naming rights for individuals and groups
and for purchasing items to fill the Chapter House with basic needs.
Incredible shopping sites are up and running at alphadelt.org and
adphibuilttolast.com.
Ongoing tours of the remodel will be offered throughout the
months ahead as we work through our mailing list. ere is nothing
to compare to an in-person tour. It is amazing! We are looking
forward to sharing more updates very soon so you can see what the
Washington Chapter Brotherhood is creating. Register for a tour at
adphibuilttolast.com.
