In 1847, Mormon leader Brigham Young and his fol- lowers arrived in the Great Salt Lake Valley in present- day Utah. In 1862, the eighth president of the United States, Mar- tin Van Buren, died in Kinderhook, N.Y. In 1866, Tennessee became the first state to be read- mitted to the Union after the Civil War. In 1929, President Herbert Hoover proclaimed the Kel- logg-Briand Pact, which renounced war as an instrument of foreign policy. In 1974, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that President Richard Nixon had to turn over subpoenaed White House tape recordings to the Watergate special prosecutor. In 1975, an Apollo spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific, completing a mission which included the first- ever docking with a Soyuz capsule from the Soviet Union. (Stone received a 16-year sentence in 2008 for attempting to kill Catholic politicians in a televised one-man attack on the North- ern Ireland legislature.) Georgia’s Democratic former gov- ernor Zell Miller was appointed to the late Republican Paul Coverdell’s Senate seat. Five years ago: Lance Armstrong won his seventh con- secutive Tour de France. Sir Richard Doll, the British sci- entist who first established a link between smoking and lung cancer, died in Oxford, England, at age 92.
