Saturday, July 17, 2010 – Daily News – 3B Religion Faith&Worship Do you have anyone in your life that you are not able to forgive? Every time you think of that person, you relive the moment. The emotional pain never seems to go away. Perhaps there are circum- stances beyond your con- trol that brought devasta- tion into your life. You’ve tried to bury the memory but it keeps surfacing. You are not alone. There are countless people that live in torment from unre- solved past issues. The good news is that there is freedom from past hurts available. God often uses present The freedom of forgiveness Church news African pastor in Red Bluff redemption through His blood, the for- giveness of sins, according to the rich- es of His grace." Our forgiveness through salvation then is a gift because we cer- tainly didn’t earn it. Romans 10:9 says, "That if you con- fess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." The One who offers for- events to trigger past-histo- ry events. Have you ever over-reacted to a small incident? Proverbs 4:23 says, "Keep your heart with all dili- gence, for out of it springs the issues of life." When we have a negative reac- tion to something in the present, we need to recognize and acknowledge that there is an unresolved issue from the past. He has made a way so we don’t have to harbor any unforgiveness in our hearts. Did you know that Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay the penalty for all your sins? You and I deserved to die, but He died in our place. Eph- esians 1:7 says, "In Him we have GOD IS ALWAYS THERE IN TIMES OF TROUBLE The Rev. Fran T. Cary, pastor of Trinity A.M.E. Church, Kansas City, Kan.: As a child, I loved hearing my mother read the Bible about people who had faith in difficult times. Noah built a boat in a time where people had never seen rain. Abraham and Sarah waited patiently for the promises of God beyond child-bear- ing years. I knew even then that the Bible wasn't merely a history book but a guide to what God would do today. Every day we read and hear about trouble in the world. However, there is hope, for Scripture teaches us in John 16:33, "... In the world you shall have tribu- lation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the Marilyn Adams GodTalk giveness knows all things about us. He even knows our thoughts before we think them. Yet He so completely forgives all our sins, that He doesn't even remember them. He will not condemn us for even one sin. Based on our own forgive- ness, He tells us to forgive others as we have been forgiven. Colossians 3:13 says it this way, "Bearing with one another, and forgiv- ing one another, if anyone has a com- plaint against another, even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do." Therefore we acknowledge the sins that were done against us, and we for- give that person even as the Lord has forgiven us. Forgiveness is not depen- dent on how we feel, but is a choice of our will. We have no right to retain or con- stantly bring into our remembrance the In these difficult times we can build our faith by reading and speaking God's word. Romans 10:17 says, "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." It is through the word that our mind gets renewed. Therefore as we build our faith, we can pull down strongholds and bring every thought captive to the will of Christ. Your faith will grow as you continue to agree with God and put his word on your lips. Hebrews 10:23 says, "Let us hold fast the profession of our faith with- out wavering; (for he is faithful that promised.)" No matter what we are going through, God is our refuge and strength, an ever-pre- sent help in times of trou- ble. Walk by faith, not by sight! REQUIRED sins done against us. He has forgiven them so we must also forgive. Here is an account of a man that was bound by unforgiveness. Peter told Simon, "For I see that you are poisoned by bitter- ness and bound by iniquity" (Acts 8:23). Anger, bitterness, resentment, and unforgiveness can all change our chemical balance. There are countless diseases that are rooted in unforgive- ness. Doctors say that 90 percent of ill- ness is psychosomatic meaning that there is no medical root, no etymology. We receive God’s forgiveness through grace. Forgiveness will eradi- cate every root of bitterness. If we fail to forgive it is because we failed to appropriate God’s grace first for our- selves and then for others. Hebrews 12:15 says, "Looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled." That verse is saying that when someone sins against us, we have grace to forgive. If we refuse to use His grace for that, we will live bound to the person who hurt us. J. Marilyn Adams is a prayer and rest home ministry leader. The sustaining truths she learned in her crucibles of affliction (or years of debilitating illness) still permeate her present teachings. Her book, "Freedom! From Past Hurts" can be obtained online. Voices of Faith: How can we build our faith in difficult times? world." ASK GOD WHAT IS Rabbi Mark Levin of Congregation Beth Torah, Overland Park, Kan.: I've heard that Elie Wiesel was asked how he could have faith in God after the Holo- caust. His response was, "Humans must have faith in something. After the Holo- caust, what can you have faith in other than God? Not government. Not the mili- tary. Not industry. The only thing you can have faith in is God." Whether the quotation is accurate, it's true. In Gene- sis, in the Garden of Eden, humans are commanded to work and preserve the world. When Adam and Eve eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, their eyes are opened and they become aware that all moral decision-making lies with them, not with God. Humans are God's arms and hands in the world. We are placed on this planet to create the good life for all of God's creatures by working and preserving our world for ourselves and subsequent generations. Each decision demands moral reckoning, a human obligation that places us above the other animals in God's creation. In every decision, in every moment, ask your- self, "What does God require of me?" (Micah 6:8) Center yourself within, per- haps through prayer or meditation. Remove self deceit, pride, personal gain, all forms of self aggran- dizement and simply ask, "What is God asking of me now?" When you act on it, it will build your faith.
