A new coach is on the way. And for the first time in 14 years, Sacramento Kings fans can celebrate a new era. The Maloof family completed the sale of the Kings and Sleep Train Arena to a group led by TIBCO Software chairman Vivek Ranadive on Friday, officially transferring ownership of the NBA franchise. Ranadive's group acquired a 65 percent controlling interest in the team at a total franchise valuation of more than $534 million, topping the NBA record of $450 million that Joe Lacob and Peter Guber bought the Golden State Warriors for in 2010. ''We are pleased for both the Maloof family and the Ranadive group, but particularly pleased for the fans of the Kings,'' NBA Commissioner David Stern said. Brothers George, Joe and Gavin Maloof also released statements thanking NBA owners, Stern and the family's limited partners with the Kings. George Maloof specifically praised Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and the City Council ''for their efforts and loyalty to the Sacramento com- AP photo Vivek Ranadive, the new majority owner of the Sacramento Kings NBA basketball team smiles as a season ticket holder he called pledged to renew their seats. munity.'' Ranadive already has been busy making moves to rebuild the fallen franchise. The Kings have an agreement in place with Warriors assistant Mike Malone to become their head coach, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly, said Malone was Ranadive's top choice. Malone's hiring officially ends Keith Smart's tenure. Smart took over the Kings for the fired Paul Westphal in January 2012 and had one year remaining on his contract. Ranadive, formerly a minority owner or the Warriors, still has to hire a general manager — a move that typically comes before finding a coach; the contract for president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie ends June 30. In a statement released through the Kings, Ranadive thanked all involved. ''Mayor Kevin Johnson and the leadership group of Sacramento should be commended for their relentless efforts, hard work and tireless drive to keep the Kings in the city where they belong,'' Ranadive said. ''We also extend our thanks to the Maloof Family for their support and cooperation throughout the sale process. Because of their efforts, this team has risen to an impressive legacy, which includes the most passionate fanbase in the NBA. Not about the quality of his play Friday, which fell below his usual standards at Roland Garros — for the second match in a row, he dropped a lethargic opening set before winning. What really bothered the usually affable Nadal was the way the French Open's scheduling decisions, and the weather, combined to force him to now play on consecutive days, while his third-round opponent Saturday, Italy's Fabio Fognini, was ''watching the TV in the locker room'' on Friday. ''That's not fair,'' Nadal said, his arms crossed, his voice stern. ''This is not right,'' the seven-time champion in Paris said moments later, shaking his head and arching his left eyebrow. What flustered Nadal, basically, was that his 4-6, 6-3, 63, 6-3 victory over Martin Klizan of Slovakia was supposed to be played Thursday but wound up being postponed because of rain — in part because it was the third match slated for its court. The 27th-seeded Fognini's second-round victory win over Lukas Rosol, meanwhile, was No. 2 on its court and finished Thursday. Nadal's point: When there's rain in the forecast, everything possible should be done to ensure that two matches whose winners will face each other next should be completed on the same day. Nadal also didn't like that while Fognini-Rosol followed one women's match — which, because they are best-ofthree-sets, tend to be shorter than the men's best-of-five — Nadal-Klizan followed both a men's match and a women's match. His match should have taken priority on a day when showers made rescheduling likely, Nadal argued, because if women ''have to play two days in a row, (it) is not a big deal.'' Ana Ivanovic, the 2008 French Open women's champion, sided with Nadal on that point, saying men should ''get more time to recover.'' ''Especially now, when he has to play day after day, I think he's right. They should play early,'' Ivanovic said after reaching the fourth round with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Virginie Razzano, the Frenchwoman who stunned Serena Williams in the first round last year. NFL 49ers sign Lattimore COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Former South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore signed a four-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers on Friday. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. The second of the 49ers' two fourth-round draft picks, Lattimore is feeling stronger each day as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury. Lattimore spoke to The Associated Press by phone about his rehab and said the most difficult part has been doctors and trainers slowing him down from overdoing things. Lattimore still believes he can be ready to play this fall, but is content to follow doctors' orders. ''I just want to train as hard as I can,'' Lattimore said. ''But I understand why they want me to slow down.'' Lattimore overcame a torn ACL as a sophomore to return to the field last season. His college career, though, ended for good against Tennessee last October when Lattimore dislocated his right knee and tore three ligaments. He had surgery a month later and declared for the NFL draft in December. He trained in Florida for several months for the NFL scouting combine and South Carolina's pro day. Lattimore's future was one of the most discussed topics prior to the draft, several analysts wondering if he'd get picked at all and have to sign as a free again. Lattimore said the work he put in was rewarded when the 49ers drafted him in April. ''It was one of the happiest moments of my life,'' he said. finals, game 2, Los Angeles at Chicago SOCCER 11 a.m. ESPN2 — Men's national teams, exhibition, United States vs. Germany, at Washington 1:30 p.m. NBCSN — MLS, Los Angeles at New England TENNIS 10 a.m. NBC — French Open, round of 16, at Paris 2 a.m. ESPN2 — French Open, round of 16, at Paris Monday COLLEGE SOFTBALL 5 p.m. ESPN2 — World Series, finals, game 1, teams TBD, at Oklahoma City CYCLING 9 p.m. NBCSN — Criterium du Dauphine, stage 2, Chatel to Oyannax, France (same-day tape) MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL 4 p.m. ESPN — Cleveland at N.Y.
