On this date: In 1543, England’s King Henry VIII married his sixth and last wife, Catherine Parr. In 1690, forces led by William of Orange defeated the army of James II at the Battle of the Boyne in Ireland. In 1812, United States forces led by Gen. William Hull entered Canada during the War of 1812 against Britain. (How- ever, Hull retreated shortly thereafter to Detroit.) In 1909, the House of Representatives joined the Senate in passing the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, allow- ing for a federal income tax, and submitted it to the states. (It was declared ratified in Feb. 1913.) In 1948, the Democratic national convention, which nom- inated President Harry S. Truman for a second term of office, opened in Philadelphia. In 1960, the Etch A Sketch Magic Screen drawing toy, invent- ed by French electrician Andre Cassagnes, was first produced by the Ohio Art Co. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter defended Supreme Court limits on government payments for poor women’s abortions, saying, ‘‘There are many things in life that are not fair.’’ In 1984, Democratic presidential candidate Walter F. Mon- dale announced he’d chosen U.S. Rep. Geraldine A. Ferraro of New York to be his running-mate; Ferraro was the first woman to run for vice president on a major-party ticket. In 1988, Democratic presidential candidate Michael S. Dukakis tapped Senator Lloyd Bentsen of Texas as his running-mate. In 1993, some 200 people were killed when an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck northern Japan and triggered a tsuna- mi. (Jones later pleaded guilty to carjacking and other crimes, and was sen- tenced to 18 to 36 years in prison; 13 police officers were later suspended for up to 15 days in connection with the incident.) New Hampshire Chief Justice David Brock, accused of eth- ical lapses, was impeached by the Legislature, the first such action against an official in the state since 1790. (He was later acquitted in a state Senate trial.) Five years ago: Mohammed Bouyeri, a Muslim extrem- ist on trial in the slaying of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, unexpectedly confessed in court, saying he was driven by reli- gious conviction. (Bouyeri was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.) Prince Albert II of Monaco acceded to the throne of a 700-year-old dynasty. Miguel Tejada and Mark Teixeira led the American League to a 7-5 win over the National League in Detroit for the AL’s eighth straight All-Star victory. One year ago: Rebels in Nigeria set fire to an oil depot and loading tankers in Lagos, killing five people in the group’s first attack outside the Delta region.
