Editor: As far as the country being outraged that the IRS would dare to target a group, I am outraged that the Tea Party is using the 501 (c4), a social purposed nonprofit, as a pass through for hiding political funding, and pretty well getting away with it. I am outraged at the number of churches that have become more political than religious and still qualify as non-political organizations. Does anyone even care what the purpose or intent of the law is? If you do — you might want to support the IRS on this issue, as the intent on the Tea Party's part had little to do with establishing a legitimate non profit. Sharon Young, Red Bluff Common core Editor: Today I got a huge surprise when my son showed me his preregistration for middle school. He will be going into 7th grade, school year 2013-2014. In nearly every course there are the words Common Core, my heart is breaking. I thought I would have another year before this was in our schools. Some of you may be asking what's common core. I am not a teacher so I couldn't begin to tell you how bad this is for the teaching of our children. I have however been researching Common Core since I heard about it on TV in March. Even if the standards weren't questionable, the way in which it came into being is very questionable. This is not true. They were developed by an organization called Achieve and the National Governors Association (NGA), both of which were generously funded by the Gates Foundation. There was minimal public engagement in the development of the Common Core. Their creation was neither grassroots nor did it emanate from the states. NGA along with Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) are both trade associations and they own the copyright for Common Core. This means that no one except these two groups can change anything about the standards. NGA was primarily responsible for writing the standards. Governor Schwarzenegger signed California on to the standards sight unseen on 1/7/10. CCS draft wasn't released until March 2010. Think about that for a moment, the standards hadn't even been drafted at the time of states signing onto Common Core. There was after all Race to the Top funding, that states would be allowed to compete for if they signed on. The $4.35 billion dollars in Race to the Top funding was included in the 2009 stimulus plan. Federal law prohibits the U.S. Department of Education from prescribing any curriculum, but in this case the Department figured out a clever way to evade the letter of the law. NCLB didn't work, now they are attempting to push yet another curriculum, this one under the radar for the most part. CCS is a one size fits all standard. Children do not learn at the same Commentary May's days are holidays' heydays "We should send your sister a Mothers Day card." "No, we shouldn't." "Why not? She's a mother now?" "Yes, but she's my sister, and your sister-in-law, she's not our mother." "But it's Mothers Day." "No it's Mother's Day, notice the apostrophe when I say it." "What does it matter?" "Because Mother's Day is meant to celebrate your own singularly possessive mother — as I said, notice the apostrophe." "Well I want to do something for my grandmother at least." I have this conversation every May. Actually to think about it I have similar conversations regarding every holiday that falls in this month. It all starts with May 1, May Day. May Day? Isn't that a distress call. This month surely warrants a public outreach campaign. Who actually knows what May Day is? You know who does? Pagans. Yes they used to celebrate spring on May 1. We know May as the time to celebrate the beginning of summer, but we'll get to Memorial Day in a bit. Other countries in the world use May Day as their version of our Labor Day. But that wouldn't work for us, because we need Labor Day — the de facto end of summer — to bookend Memorial Day. More on that holiday later. A handful of days into the month we come across Cinco de Mayo, a day the historical significance and meaning or which gets butchered constantly. That should come as no surprise since historians still can't agree on what each side was trying to gain from the battle the holiday commemorates. On the third Saturday of the month is Armed Forces Day. This holiday gets overlooked every year because Memorial Day follows roughly a week later. And it's on that day every year I become annoyed when a segment of America celebrates the military in general under the guise of barbecues, cold beer There's no reason I can't and recreational activities. thank a veteran for serIt's not combining vice on Mother's Day the holiday with the or tell my Mom I love start of summer I her on Memorial Day. protest, but those that It seems all these foist the true meaning holidays that sprinkle of Memorial Day onto our calendar are nothevery veteran they ing more than red encounter. lights — checkpoints Veterans have their to remind us that we own day, Nov. 11, it's shouldn't go more called Veterans Day. than 365 days without Notice the lack of an remembering how apostrophe — feel free much our mothers, to celebrate them all.
