Friday, July 9, 2010 – Daily News – 5B GOP chair shrugs off Afghan gaffe GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. (AP) — In his first public remarks since his widely condemned comments on Afghanistan, Republican Party chairman Michael Steele said Thursday he ‘‘ain’t goin’ anywhere’’ despite calls for his resignation. Steele’s appearance before Colorado Republicans was his first since he came under fire last week from within the GOP for call- ing the nine-year-old conflict in Afghanistan a mistaken ‘‘war of Obama’s choosing.’’ The gaffe prompted criticism of Steele’s leadership, and some calls to resign. ‘‘Every time something happens, people say, ’Oh, you should step down. You should step down.’ The reality is, that’s not hap- pening, so stop the noise on that,’’ Steele told about 100 volunteers and state GOP leaders. Steele added that stepping down from his post is a bad idea with November’s general election just a few months away. ‘‘We have too much work to do,’’ he said. Although he didn’t apologize for his Afghanistan comment, Steele affirmed his support for the war effort and told the crowd he is ‘‘foursquare, 1,000 percent with these troops on the ground ... and that should’ve been very, very clear.’’ He also joked about his outspoken nature, referring to it as his ‘‘individuality.’’ That individuality, he said, ‘‘you know, from time to time gets me in a little trouble, but that’s OK, we understand how that works,’’ Steele said to laughter from the volunteers. In his remarks captured July 1 on camera and posted online, Steele criticized President Barack Obama and his handling of the Afghan war and suggested it can’t be won. Republican officials later confirmed Steele made the comments at a Connecticut fundraiser, which was closed to the news media. ‘‘If he’s such a student of history, has he not understood that, you know, that’s the one thing you don’t do is engage in a land war in Afghanistan? All right? Because everyone who’s tried, over a thousand years of history, has failed,’’ Steele said in the remarks last week. ‘‘And there are reasons for that. There are other ways to engage in Afghanistan.’’ Field Poll: Calif. Senate race in statistical tie SACRAMENTO (AP) — Sen. Barbara Boxer’s popu- larity with Californians is falling as she finds herself in a statistical tie with her Republican challenger, for- mer Hewlett-Packard Co. chief executive Carly Fiori- na, according to a Field Poll released Thursday. The survey found 47 per- cent of likely voters support Boxer while 44 percent back Fiorina, a gap that is within the poll’s margin of error. The result is similar to the last Field Poll, taken in March. That survey showed Boxer with 45 percent sup- port, compared with 44 per- cent for Fiorina. Meanwhile, the senator’s popularity has fallen. Just 41 percent of voters say they have a favorable image of the three-term incumbent, while 52 percent have an unfavorable image. Appraisals of the job Boxer is doing are now close to the lowest since she was first elected to the Senate in 1992, pollsters found. Fiorina, a newcomer to politics, is challenging Boxer after beating two politicians in the Republican primary, former congressman Tom Campbell and state Assem- blyman Chuck DeVore. That contest does not appear to have badly dam- aged her image, according to the Field Poll. Would-be vot- ers were more likely to rate their perception of her as favorable than unfavorable. The poll also revealed sharp differences in voter support based on education levels and age. Voters who have no more than a high school education back Fiorina 52 percent to 39 percent, while those with a postgraduate degree support Boxer 60 percent to 36 per- cent. Voters under age 40 prefer Boxer 52 percent to 33 per- cent, while voters in all other age brackets lean slightly toward Fiorina. The poll has a sampling error rate of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points for likely voters and a higher margin for subgroups. Poll- sters surveyed 1,390 people by telephone from June 22 to July 5. The poll also found Boxer has sizable leads over Fiori- na with Hispanic, Asian and black voters. In Boxer’s first head-to- head race with another woman, the incumbent leads among female voters by 11 percentage points, 51 percent to 40 percent. Fiorina is pre- ferred among men, 49 per- cent to 42 percent. Legal Notices Legal Notices LEGAL NOTICE NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE T.S.
