2 SIGMA PHI EPSILON I was in Palm Springs in February of this year, minding my own business with the only responsibility being that of kicking my dog, Cooper, out of my recliner, when I get a text that the showers in one of the bathrooms would not drain. I thought, This doesn't sound good. Since Dean Willis '72 was home, he was able to get our plumber over to see what the issue is. They discovered that our 52-year-old cast iron drain pipe had collapsed. "Houston, we have a problem." Thus began the process of replacing the drain and, as a result, four bathrooms also needed to be redone. Contractors were mobilized and work began. Funding was just around the corner with a bank loan. Never having had a problem before, as we own the land and house free and clear, we expected that this would be a simple process. However, COVID-19 and a tough business climate meant that banks were not making cash-out loans, especially to commercial clients. The search for funding was in full swing. I refer to this search for funding as the Great Bank Caper. While Dean went around town getting doors slammed in his face, bills were mounting. The solution was to call on people for unsecured, interest-free, short-term loans. Yikes! The first four people contacted said yes, and immediately wrote checks totaling $130,000. Those people were Dean Willis, Scott Carle '77, the undergraduate members, and myself. Eventually, Dean did get financing, and that story ends well. Thank you to all for the bail out! As I sat typing this missive, the bathrooms were nearing completion, and students were soon to arrive and try to get an education. I reflected that in 1967, my father, Swede, was also on the AVC board, signing a loan to build the house we have now. As my work is completed so is my term on the AVC board. Thirteen years of volunteer work is coming to an end. I want to assure you that the house is in good shape. More importantly, the AVC board and the current membership of Colorado Delta are a pleasure to be with, as well as strong. So next time you are in Golden, please stop by and say hello. Also, go down and wash your hands in our new bathrooms. I will go back to kicking Cooper out of the recliner.
