Varner have been a dominant duo in their run to the Northern Section Championships, which was completed Tuesday in Chico. The two had dropped one match total as a team during the season and dispatched University Prep's top team of Ricky Ward and Nathan Hernandez in a semifinal Tuesday in comeback fashion, winning in three sets after dropping the first 6-7 (4). Shaffer and Varner took the second set 6-2, but found themselves in a 1-4 whole in the third before rallying back to win five straight games and the match as the two made key shots to avoid an early exit. In the final, played 30 minutes after the semi and in 95 degree heat, Varner and Shaffer took on Pleasant Valley's top doubles team of Pete Gibson and Izik Walsh at the Chico Raquet Club. Red Bluff's top doubles team had been on the court for hours, and Pleasant Valley took home first-place honors in the section with a 6-4 win in the third set. The Vikings received a bye in the semifinal round after Chico was forced to forfeit its NBA match because of injuries. Shaffer and Varner were coming off a Sac River League championship, which was the third straight year the Spartans earned the title. ——— Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 5272151, ext. 111 or at spor ts@redbluffdailynews.com. Board of Governors quash Kings move to Seattle By SCHUYLER DIXON AP Sports Writer DALLAS (AP) — NBA owners voted Wednesday to reject the Sacramento Kings' proposed move to Seattle, the latest in a long line of cities that have tried to land the franchise. The 22-8 vote followed a recommendation made last month by the NBA's relocation committee and may have finally brought an end to an emotional saga that has dragged on for nearly three years. A group led by investor Chris Hansen had a deal to buy the team. Hansen hoped to move the franchise to Seattle and rename it the SuperSonics. The original Sonics were moved to Oklahoma City in 2008 and were renamed the Thunder. Commissioner David Stern said the league will spend the next 24 to 48 hours talking to the Maloofs, the team's owners, about working out a deal with a competing ownership group in Sacramento. ''The big winner here was Sacramento,'' Stern said. The Maloofs reached an agreement in January to sell a 65 percent controlling interest in the team to Hansen's group at a total franchise valuation of $525 million, topping the NBA-record $450 million for Joe Lacob and Peter Guber to buy the Warriors in 2010. Then Hansen increased his offer to $550 million, which implies buying the 65 percent stake for about $357 million. Following the relocation committee's unanimous recommendation on April 29 to deny the move to Seattle, Hansen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer dug deeper into their pockets in a final attempt to sway the NBA Board of Governors. They raised the valuation of the Kings to $625 million, or $406 million for the Maloofs' interest in the franchise, and offered a $115 million reloca- See VOTE, page 2B AP Sports Writer OAKLAND (AP) — Forgive the San Antonio Spurs if they aren't that excited about holding a 3-2 series lead over the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference semifinals. After all, they've been ahead twice before. If the Spurs want to close out the Warriors in Game 6 on Thursday night at rowdy Oracle Arena, they'll have to do what neither team has in this series: win consecutive games. Golden State also is 4-0 after a loss in the playoffs. ''Nobody talks about getting this over with like you've got a rash,'' Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. ''Like you can take a pill or put some cream on it, it's going to be gone. This is a war. They're a class team. They bust their (butts) at both ends of the floor. It's not about getting rid of anything. It's about going and playing and that's about it.'' San Antonio has increasingly shown its veteran savvy the last three games, and Golden State has looked like it's finally wearing down from all its injuries. Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and the rest of the Spurs overwhelmed the Warriors in Tuesday night's 109-91 win in San Antonio. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson — described by Coach Mark Jackson as the ''greatest shooting backcourt in NBA history'' — combined to score just 13 points on 6of-22 shooting. Curry has refused to use the left ankle he sprained late in Game 3 as an excuse, but anybody who has watched can clearly see he has been slowed by the injury. Thompson, who failed to even attempt a 3-pointer for the first time all season Tuesday, has been shut down by San Antonio since scoring 34 points in Game 2. Neither Curry nor Thompson was made available to speak to reporters during the team's light shootaround Wednesday in Oakland. The rest of the Warriors insist they're not worried about the ''Splash Brothers'' or the team's ability to respond. ''We're never going to quit. We're never going to die.
