Los Molinos 2. Hamilton 4 p.m. TRACK & FIELD League championships at Foothill By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor Red Bluff High's baseball team last year felt the burn of an early playoff exit. Today, the seventh-seeded Spartans (1613, 5-7 Sac River League) will try return the favor when they visit the second-seeded Chico Panthers (18-7, 11-1 Eastern Athletic League) at 4:30 p.m. in the first round of Northern Section Division I playoffs. Red Bluff finished its 2012 campaign with a 21-8 record and had won 17 straight games at one point. The team earned the No. 3 seed and faced No. 6 Shasta in the first round. Red Bluff fell 4-2, and seniors Evan Sinclair and Tyler Boone remember the feeling. "Last year, it sucked to be honest." said Boone, whose work ethic this season was praised by Spartans coach Ryland Sanders. He said the team has moved past the that 4-2 result. Sinclair added: "I've been telling them it's a bad feeling. It could be our last game and you want to go out and give it your all. Not make the same mistakes that we did last year." Red Bluff's season this year, in a few words, has been up and down. The team capable of handing top-seeded Foothill (27-4, 11-1 Sac River League) its first and only league loss finished with a league record under the .500 mark. "We've had mountains, we've had valleys," said Sanders, who is in his first year heading the varsity squad. "This team's capable of beating anybody, and on the flip-side, we can go out and lose to just about anybody." And in the playoffs, it's one and done. The Spartans, who can put up runs (204 to the Panthers' 181), faced and beat Chico 7-2 all the way back on March 1. Sinclair went 2 for 4 with an RBI in that game and went on to finish with the secondbest batting average (.474) in league. "The way Evan Sinclair has performed on the field this year, you can't argue with that," Sanders said. So what do the Spartans need to do to beat Chico today and advance to the semifinals? Sinclair said Red Bluff's biggest challenge is not letting the team beat itself. And to Sanders, the answer is obvious. "It comes down to pitching, defense and hitting But that's what it always comes down to," he said, adding, "I'm excited for the potential that we have, and I'm hoping that that team that has the ability to beat anybody shows up." ——— Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 5272151, ext. 111 or at sports@redbluffdailynews.com. Cleveland routs Oakland, 9-2 CLEVELAND (AP) — Jason Kipnis, Nick Swisher and Mark Reynolds hit indisputable home runs and Scott Kazmir struck out 10 in six innings, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 9-2 win over Oakland on Thursday and a four-game sweep of the Athletics. The Indians ended the series with a convincing blowout, one day after they won 4-3 with the help of a blown call in the ninth inning when umpires, after watching a video replay, ruled that an apparent tying home run by Oakland's Adam Rosales was a double. Major League Baseball acknowledged the umpires made an ''improper call,'' but executive vice president Joe Torre said the decision is final. Kipnis hit a two-run homer in the first off Bartolo Colon (3-2) for the Indians, who won for the 10th time in 11 games and improved to 13-4 since April 20. Kazmir (2-1) allowed one run and five hits and has won consecutive starts for the first time since 2010. Josh Donaldson homered for the A's, who fell to .500 for the first time since April 4 when they were 2-2. Oakland is just 6-14 after starting 12-4. The Indians were already leading by six runs when MLB released a statement indicating umpire Angel Hernandez and his crew had erred Wednesday night. After watching a video replay, they failed to reverse a call and gave Rosales a double instead of a homer. TV replays showed Rosales' shot off Chris Perez had easily cleared the 19foot-high wall. Red Bluff High golfers Peter Mitzel and Dylan Grossman are two of the four Division I qualifiers for Masters championships at Graeagle Meadows on Monday. Mitzel shot a 76 Tuesday at the Northern Section Division I Championships at Butte Creek Country Club while Grossman finished the day with an 81. Daniel Frantz, who earned All-League honors in the Sac River League, is listed as being disqualified. Joining Mitzel and Grossman are Enterprise High's Sean Greenhood (78) and Las Plumas High's Nelson Smith (88). The at-large Spartans shot a team score of 473, which was good for sixth place overall. Eastern Athletic League champion Pleasant Valley led the way with a team score of 385, followed by Shasta (395), Chico (414), Foothill (428), Enterprise (468), Red Bluff (473) and Las Plumas (519). Red Bluff's Derek Runnels shot a 100, Kyler Pucket a 101 and Brandon LaChance finished with a score of 115. Pleasant Valley, Shasta, Chico and Foothill qualified as teams for the Masters championships. ——— Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 527-2151, ext. 111 or at sports@redbluffdailynews.com.
