FALL 2020 ALABAMA BETA s THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA SIGMA PHI EPSILON Inside Striving for Consistent Improvement ~ p. 2-3 Welcome, New Members ~ p. 3 Alumni News ~ p. 4 Moving Forward through Challenging Times Alabama Beta Welcomes New Chapter Support Staff T he COVID-19 pandemic has brought upon many unprecedented challenges to the 2020-21 academic year. Because of this, SigEp Headquarters will move from using regional staff to Chapter-based staff. This will help provide specialized support to individual chapters as each campus scenario will be unique. Alabama Beta and the AVC are happy to welcome Jordan Sykes and Matt Wallace to our Chapter support team. Jordan and Matt went through a nine-week training period at the Kenneth S. Maddox Summer Development Program. The training included sessions with expert facilitators, executive-level classes at the University of Richmond, and public speaking instruction. Chapter support and services will be provided virtually for the time being. However, the staff is organized with the flexibility to provide in-person support once travel and large-group interaction becomes a feasible option. We look forward to working with our Chapter support staff and can't wait to see what they bring to the table. The active Chapter is over 150 members strong going into the fall semester and the AVC is pleased with the Chapter leadership selected by the brothers of Alabama Beta. On top of placing second among all fraternities academically, the active Chapter was able to raise funds for various charities from several philanthropic efforts before campus was shut down. Brothers are excited to return to campus in the fall and look to attain the top spot academically. One of the key focuses for the Chapter moving forward will be upperclassman engagement and involvement. This has been a challenge in the past for a number of reasons, but mainly because of the University's housing rules. To improve our brother mentorship program and strengthen the bonds of our brotherhood, we need to find new and creative ways to get our upperclassmen more involved in the Chapter again. We want to develop a culture of understanding in the Chapter to better transition traditions and information from year to year and position to position for executive board members. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or ideas, do not hesitate to reach out. Please be safe and care for those in greatest need during these extremely challenging times.
