MAY 10-16, 2020 "WAC presented a great Bollywood style show called Taj Express a few years ago, shortly after I started. It was one of the most diverse audiences I'd seen at WAC, and it led us to start asking ourselves what we could or should be doing differently to make sure the shows we present reflect the cultural expressions of our Northwest Arkansas neighbors. Ultimately, the answer we chose to pursue was 'programming in collaboration with — instead of for — our cultural communities.'" India was chosen first, Galbraith says, in part because of connections formed with Heena Patel, a cultural consultant and producer of South Asian arts. But "in the coming years, we hope to replicate the model with other cultural communities in the region," he adds. And with authenticity the principal goal of the first Mosaix festival, indie films seemed the perfect online event, Galbraith says. "The five films we're screening — all subtitled in English — reflect people, places and subject matter we might not otherwise learn about," he explains. "Particularly we non-desi folks. "The selection committee that chose these films was comprised of both desi and non-desi, three of whom were film aficionados — with me being the outlier," he goes on. "In selecting these films, the first and overwhelming criteria was the quality of filmmaking. Beyond that, we also looked at subject matter, geographic representation, language representation, and gender representation. I hope these films give desi audiences a chance to see and hear from relevant contemporary voices, and give non- desi audiences some insight into some of our global and regional neighbors. "And if that leads to cultural curiosity and acceptance, well, that'd be great." While walking home with his little daughter, he comes face to face with a group of people stealing sand from the river- bank. He realizes that rampant illegal sand mining is destroying their river and is responsible for the depletion of groundwater in his village. He goes to the district collector for help, but his complaint is only dealt with casually. Determined to gather evidence against the sand-mafia, he decides to take matters in his own hands. Directed by Vikram Aggarwal. Running time 12:00. General audience content. "Our Share of the Sky" — On a winter night, two men encounter their sleepless thoughts. Familiar fears kindle new words on their faces. The film follows them as they talk, between the noise living in buildings and the silence of the sky. Directed by Priya Naresh. Running time 13:00. General audience content. Recorded interviews with filmmakers Kirti Singh, Vikram Aggarwal and Priya Naresh will follow the screenings of their films.
