MAY 10-16, 2020 WHAT'S UP! 3 FAQ Mosaix Festival: Indie Films India WHEN — Noon May 11 through noon May 13 WHERE — Online via the Walton Arts Center COST — Free, but registration is required INFO — Register at tickets.waltonartscenter. org/19847/19848 BECCA MARTIN-BROWN NWA Democrat-Gazette O bviously, the Walton Arts Center couldn't pack up all of its patrons and transport them to India for the first-ever Mosaix Festival. Instead, visionaries like Scott Galbraith, WAC vice president of programming and executive producer, set out to bring India to Northwest Arkansas for five days of film, dance, Bollywood, jazz and comedy. And then the coronavirus hit. "Honestly, we're still mourning not being able to present Mosaix as we'd planned," Galbraith says in answer to a question. "The desi (Indian) community invested so much time, energy and trust in WAC, and we wanted to be able to honor their commitment. And we're just plain eager for Northwest Arkansas to enjoy the arts experiences we'd curated for them. So, where we could, we moved events to an online environment. Our traditional stages had to go dark for the moment, but we can still find ways to bring great performers from around the world to Northwest Arkansas. Our commitment to our mission hasn't changed, only the way we fulfill that mission." In the case of Mosaix, that means a virtual film festival, presented in collaboration with the Fayetteville Film Fest. Indie Films India starts at noon May 11; it's free, and it will include five short films ranging from 9 to 15 minutes each. "From the beginning, we wanted Mosaix to be guided by authenticity," explains Galbraith, remembering his first experience with the Indian community in Northwest Arkansas. Cultural Curiosity WAC film series takes virtual trip to India The first-ever Mosaix Festival was intended to bring the culture of India to audiences at the Walton Arts Center. Due to covid-19 concerns, most of the events were canceled. But a series of short films will be available online May 11-13 during the Indie Films India virtual film festival.
