Alumni Update
Philip Hill '56 entered Chapter Eternal on
the morning of February 8, 2019, due to heart
failure at home. After receiving his bachelor's
degree at Iowa State, Phil was awarded a
scholarship to attend University of Illinois
College of Medicine. He earned his medical
degree in 1963 and was drafted to the Medical
Corps of the U.S. Army in 1964. He spent
a year at Fort Sam Houston, then served
as a medical officer in the 93rd Evacuation
Hospital in Long Binh, South Vietnam, until
July 1966. Phil kept in touch and reunited
with the people with whom he served until
the end of his life. Returning to civilian life,
he did his internship and residency at Wayne
County General Hospital in Detroit. Philip
went on to complete a fellowship in cardiology
at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann
Arbor in 1969. He had an impressive career as
a cardiologist and was a founding member of
the Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery Group at
the Burns Clinic in Petoskey, Mich. Although
Phil was diminished by dementia in recent
years, he lived happily and comfortably with
his beloved wife, Elizabeth, in their home
on Crystal Lake. The years Phil spent with
Elizabeth were the most contented of his life.

The 2019 Anson MArsTon

ill received the Anson Marston Medal at
the ISU alumni weekend in October 2019.
The award, which has been around since
1938, is awarded to a College of Engineering
alumnus in recognition of outstanding
achievement in advancing engineering science,
technology or policy having national and
international impact in academics, industry,
public service, government or other venues.
"As if the honor itself wasn't enough, the
really special part was the trip back to Ames,
Iowa, and who I got to share it with. Gary and
Todd Gardiner made the trip with me, and
we got to tour the campus and visit the Alpha
Tau Omega house," Bill said. "The biggest
surprise of the weekend though, was Jim
Schultz (longtime Gardiner adviser and former
Trane president) and Mike Schwartz (CEO
of Daikin Applied) showed up to share the
occasion. Jim and Mike are both ISU alumni
as well, and it meant a lot to me that they took
the time and effort to travel from Austin and
the Twin Cities, respectively, for the event.
Good friends are just plain good friends."
Bill lives in Solon, Ohio, and can be
reached at billg3400@aol.com.
