TAU TALK ALPHA TAU OMEGA AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY SPRING 2020 F or Patrick McVey '11, Alpha Tau Omega began with friendship. During his first fall semester, he befriended members of Gamma Upsilon and, in the spring, became their brother. "Those friends showed me that ATW offered the chance to be part of a larger brotherhood with opportunities to be active on campus and beyond," Patrick recalls. "It was an opportunity I never would've had otherwise, and it also provided me lifelong friendships that are as strong today as they were in college." In the last year, another opportunity opened for Patrick when he spoke to his brothers on the alumni board. Seeing them serve in a rewarding role inspired him to give back to the chapter and, as of the new year, he now serves Gamma Upsilon as chapter advisor. Patrick joined at a strong, promising time for the active chapter and looks forward to working with them further. "These are men who have found excellence and are striving to continually improve," he said. The brothers are proud True Merit recipients with an already-high level of involvement on campus. "They are in a great place to maintain that involvement, keep up the strong philanthropic success, and further their fields of study." As an undergraduate brother, Patrick served as recruitment chairman and risk management chairman. One of his favorite memories is participating in the ISU Dance BROTHERS NEVER STOP LEARNING Patrick McVey '11 Returns to Campus as Chapter Advisor Marathon with the brotherhood, in which they raised money for the Miracle Network and had a great time doing so. Patrick said the best advice he ever received is: "Learning is a lifetime task. One should never stop striving to continue their education and learn new things." Patrick hopes to further inspire that mindset within the chapter during his time as advisor. He enjoys working out and attending events around Des Moines in his spare time. To connect with Patrick about ATW, you can reach him at patrickmcv2@gmail.com. T he Corporation Board, in partnership with the two undergraduate board members, made the decision to close the chapter facility for the remainder of the school year beginning Monday, March 23. The undergraduates collected their belongings in accordance with CDC guidelines and moved home for the remainder of the school year. This decision was made after Iowa State University moved to online and virtual instruction through the remainder of the semester and issued a similar policy for those living in the residence halls. We'll determine when the chapter facility can be reopened based on governmental and Iowa State University guidance. We owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to House Director Mike Kelly for his willingness to oversee this process. The well-being of our undergraduate members, fellow Iowa State University students, and the communities in which they operate are and always will be of paramount importance to guide our decisions. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, you can reach the entire Corporation Board at gamma-upsilon-alumni-board@ googlegroups.com. Please be safe and care for those in greatest need during these extremely challenging times. Love and Respect, Michael Nelson '07 Corporation Board President GAMMA UPSILON RESPONSE TO COVID-19
