3 Kappa Alpha Chapter A s a student at Florida State, Jennifer Jacob Perez '04 was bitten by the travel bug and decided to study abroad. She soon secured a loan, passport, and student visa, and before she knew it, she was off and running to six weeks in Italy. "During that time, I fell in love with travel," Jennifer recalls. "Not just any travel, but slow travel. e kind of travel that allows you to wander and experience travel like a local would." Seven years later, Jennifer convinced her skeptical mother to travel with her to the part of the world that had changed her life. To ease her mother's nerves, she went the extra mile and planned every single detail of their trip: itineraries, folders, and documents with all the information they would need. "I did all this work to remove the intimidation of travel, and then I realized… is anyone else doing this? What if I can help those who never imagined that they would travel the world do exactly that?" at epiphany sparked the idea for Explorateur Travel, a travel planning firm at which Jennifer and her team prepare detailed itineraries to suit their clients' tastes. Insight from Sisterhood Jennifer knew from the moment she met the sisters of Kappa Delta that they resembled the woman she wanted to be someday. She immersed herself immediately in the culture of Kappa Alpha, decorating and painting banners for events, eventually rising through the ranks to Chapter president. "I was always one to jump headfirst into involvement, and my sisters welcomed my enthusiasm. As president, the challenge of having important conversations and managing expectations helped shape my ability to do the same as an employer." ough Jennifer and her sisters didn't realize it at the time, recruitment also paved the way for professional development. Hosting potential new members, handling difficult conversations with grace, and making sure that each person le with a positive impression all proved to be crucial life skills. "I started my career in human resources, and the parallels to recruitment are uncanny," she says. "I can confidently say that my interviewing skills came from four years of spirit weeks." Working with Friends For Jennifer, the best memories of Kappa Delta are the simple ones, like spending time with sisters in the common areas and upstairs' daybeds. She shares those sacred memories with her member class to this day and has an annual get-together with many of those sisters. "I speak with a Kappa Alpha sister almost every day—mainly because I have one on my team!" Jennifer's employees at Explorateur Travel include several KD sisters from around the country as well. "at wasn't intentional, but Kappa Delta tends to be a great indicator of someone's core values and interests." Jennifer also believes in giving back to Kappa Delta when she can, as the organization gave her so much. She served as a traveling consultant aer graduation, and aer moving to Jacksonville she served on the North Florida chapter's advisory board; she received the university's Advisor of the Year award in 2016.
