Tethering Ordinance
Goes Into Effect A tethering ordinance went into effect in Fayetteville June 1, making it illegal to tether a dog, either chained or tied.
The City of Fayetteville adopted Cumberland County’s ban last November. Reasons for the ordinance include how tethering can be cruel to animals, especially during inclement or severe weather conditions, and how tethering can cause inadvertent choking or strangulation.
Tethering can also cause animals to become aggressive, increasing the risk of attacks on people or other animals, and can make them easy targets for attacks or harassment.
Unsanitary living conditions, relating to feces, urine and food waste, are also an issue with tethering.
Owners may still stay outside with the pet while it is tethered, though.
City employees are working with the County’s Animal Control Department to enforce the ordinance.
