Shortly thereafter, I received a call from Dr. Chris Killien '63 who was also wondering, "What the heck is Informatics?" It was a short discussion between two humble troglodytes who had no idea what such a field of study involves. We were frankly lost but give us a break. Back in our days, the personal computer had yet to emerge, let alone cell phones, and the Internet. And for those of you who graduated in the '50s-'90s, who also may not know what an Informatics degree entails, the following came to light: Purely by chance while scanning the spring edition of the athletic department's Go Huskies magazine, Informatics was mentioned. An article by Brian Beaky entitled "Balancing Act," featured a story of a celebrated former UW gymnast, Malory Rose, who graduated in the spring with a degree in Informatics. Brian also confessed ignorance of what careers may result from this field of study. He was able to obtain insight through the following quotation from Malory, "…the program focuses on the intersection of people and technology, and specifically the ways in which people use technology to communicate, analyze and store information." Apologies, but for us fossils, that may remain a bit mysterious. Brian went on to relay a quotation from Matthew Saxton, the iSchool's associate dean for academics, stating, "People go into a variety of careers, ranging from project managers and program developers, to consulting, website design, interface design, information security, analytics, visualization...It's a huge range of careers." Informatics is now one of the most popular degrees pursued at UW. Some of those words may mean something to some and nothing to others. Regardless, we have six Alpha Delt graduates launching amazing careers in this area—not to mention graduates in differing fields, including engineering, finance, economics, marketing, accounting, geography GIS, communications, computer science, and pre-medicine. Hopefully, this short discussion helps us troglodytes experience a bit of a meaningful "intersection" and understanding between us and our graduates of today and their careers of the future. No wonder we are a leader academically on campus. We have much to be proud of in the Washington Chapter of ΑΔΦ! Xapie, Howard Strickler '63 Preston Ball '23 • Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.
