In the report, Environmental Command submits alternative plans and their impacts on posts and the surrounding communities. The plans are designed to help the Army reach its target reduction of total force from 562,000 to 490,000 by 2020. The cuts will come from virtually every installation around the country, including Fort Bragg. Just how many people would be cut from each spot will be decided at a later time. This report is designed to give those decision makers more information on impacts. HOW TO COMMENT • Public feedback on the Programmatic Environmental Assessment can be done through March 21. • The Chamber has prepared a letter you can print, sign and send in. The letter is at fayettevillencchamber.org along with the address. • E-mail comments can be sent to usarmy.jbsa.aec.mbx@mail.mil • Visit our Website for links to the report and other useful information. a community, we need to make sure we are following this process from Day 1 so we can have an educated, combined response and call to action." The report says a worst-case (although unlikely) scenario would have 8,000 active-duty and civilian personnel cut by 2020. If that were to happen, some $334.6 million in annual direct salaries (and $390 million in total salaries) would be removed from the local economy. Nearly 20,000 people from the local population a combined 10,584 jobs would be lost. Alternative 2 has less impact on Fort Bragg, as any losses would be offset by additions elsewhere. But that alternative doesn't accomplish the Army's endgoal reduction. The final alternative is a "no action" alternative that would make no changes to the current structures. That path is unlikely as well. "Obviously cuts of this magnitude would cripple our local economy and be a costly blow after years of growth through the previous BRAC process," said Chamber President & CEO Doug Peters. "We are confident through discussions with Fort Bragg leadership that this outcome is highly unlikely. But as "We feel it's important to make sure our business community is represented in this process," Peters said. "We encourage as many people as possible to join in and provide feedback that will help improve the understanding for the decision makers about our community."
