2A Daily News – Wednesday, March 6, 2013 Community people&events Self defense training Courtesy photo Zack Scaggs helps Harmony Irwin overcome any fears she may have. Special to the DN At PAL Martial Arts boys are encouraged to be gentlemen while girls learn to be more confident in their skills. It's social self defense. In early December 2012, Alternatives to Violence and PAL began a partnership about self defense for women, which also includes empowerment and situational awareness training for anyone who feels vulnerable to violence. There are no easy tricks to learning self defense and it takes time to gain the confidence needed in situational awareness. Some conditioning and lots of personal discipline are also strongly encouraged. Free regular PAL Martial Arts classes are on Mondays for beginners and Thursdays for novices, intermediate and advanced students from 3-5 p.m. at the dojo, at 1005 Vista Way, Suite C, near the Red Bluff Airport. Free Women's Self Defense and Empowerment classes are held at dojo on Wednesdays, 5:30-6:30 p.m. For more information on PAL visit www.tehamaso.org or call 529-7950. For the dojo call 200-1031 or 840-0345. A website on anti-bullying is at www.end-bully.com. Several young women and men PAL graduates are giving back by donating their time to the dojo, especially to the Women's Self Defense and Empowerment classes. Raise $5,000 For Purchase Of Oil Plant Local citizens interested in the proposed purchase of the Tuscan oil well plant and resuming the work of drilling there held another enthusiastic meeting at the chamber of commerce rooms last evening. This does not make him a potential risk. My son struggles every day with epilepsy, along with the side effects of several medications. Children his age can be brutal to those who are different. He withdraws to protect himself. We moved him to a different school because his old one would not provide the resources he needs. Now he can maintain a decent grade point with teachers he respects and likes. His interest in guns is no different from that of other 15-year-old boys in our area, and more importantly, our son has no access to guns. He has a healthy respect for their power. I admit that impulse control is not his strong point, but we work with him to learn what is appropriate. If you get to know him, you will find a nice kid with a good sense of humor, a passion for history and genuine empathy. He doesn't like to see others being mistreated, because he knows how it feels. Thank you, Annie, for saying, "We also hope you can be his friend." That's what my son wants more than anything in the world: someone to accept him for who he is. — A Father Who Knows Now Serving Beer & Wine ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Prime Rib Stromer Realty every Fri. & Sat. 590 Antelope Blvd Best Homemade Pies in Town • Ice Cream Orders to go Bldg.
