Alumnae were then asked about their perception of the Mississippi Beta Chapter
today. Most interviewed alumnae believe the chapter is strong and doing very well.
A 1960s alumnae said, "I am proud of the chapter today and pleased to see what
they've accomplished in recent years." Additionally, alumnae recognize the
chapter's growth in recruitment each year. A 1970s alumnae said, "The women are
well-known and respected on campus. Pi Phi is desired by in state and out-of-state
students." Many alumnae shared that they do not have a perception of the chapter
as they have not been kept in contact on their accomplishments and updates via
alumnae communication. As discussed previously, a robust alumnae relations
program is important because it gives the opportunity to share chapter
communication with alumnae on a regular basis. Alumnae are more willing to be
involved with and support their chapter when they perceive it to be successful.
During the interviews, alumnae discussed their feelings toward sororities and Greek
life in general. A majority believe sororities are still relevant, especially at a strong
Greek school like the University of Mississippi. A 1980s alumnae said, "Greek life
is 100% a part of the Ole Miss fabric. I do not know what students do if they are
not joining a chapter." Many interviewees recognized the chapter sizes and
changes in the sorority experience compared to their college experience but agree
that sorority life gives young women a strong support system and provides
opportunities for personal growth. A 1990s alumna said, "Women find their
confidence and discover who they are going to be through a sorority experience."
A 1980s alumna said, "The structure Greek life provides is great. It helps students
establish good morals and has a philanthropic nature that is important for college
students today."
Overall, alumnae agree that the outcomes received from the sorority experience
such as lifelong friendships, community engagement, and personal and professional
skills are still applicable today and remain as strengths of the chapter. Although
alumnae cherish memories in the chapter house, they also recognize the house has
been a weakness for a long time. Prospective donors want to support a cause that
