Zeta Psi Chapter 2 Becoming a Better Leader How Alumni's Generosity Impacted Ethan Fernandes '19 Through Sigma Chi's Leadership Programs S eeing Sigma Chi's authenticity and desire to help its members reach their full potential, Ethan Fernandes '19 found his home at Zeta Psi. There he found a fraternity and brothers to support him and help him prepare for life after college. But one of the most valuable opportunities Zeta Psi has given Ethan has been a variety of leadership roles in the chapter. During his college career, Ethan has held several officer positions, including Derby Days Chairman, Recruitment Chairman, and Pro Consul. Although these positions have tested his leadership capabilities, Ethan believes that attending Sigma Chi's Horizons, BLTW, and brotherhood retreats truly heightened his leadership skills. "Throughout these programs, I reflected on many experiences and I've had to identify the areas I had for growth and where my strengths are. I know, for sure, my eagerness to learn and grow would not be as strong if it wasn't for these programs." Beyond helping find ways to become a better leader, through Sigma Chi's programs Ethan learned how to better relate to those he was leading. "One of the main lessons [I learned] is understanding that every person is different," he recalled. "When you can understand how each person is wired and lead them the way they want to be led, you will be a much more effective leader." However, having the opportunity to attend these leadership programs would not be possible without alumni supporting the Lincoln W. Pavey Educational Foundation. For Ethan, having their support has been invalu- able to his college and Sigma Chi experience. "The participation and involvement [of alumni] inspires and reminds us of the lifelong commitment of this fraternity," he explains. "Thank you for the gifts and donations that have provided many opportunities!" Ethan is in his final semester double majoring in finance and operations management. He will be starting as an operations finance analyst for Amazon after graduation. Although he is looking forward to starting his career, he will miss chapter meetings and spending time with his brothers in the chapter house. You can connect with Ethan at efernandes197@gmail.com.
