Loyal. Private. During her time as an Alpha Beta active member, Janet honed her leadership skills as a leader of the Alpha Chi Eight Notes and a member of the Panhellenic Council. She was the sweetheart of Sigma Chi in 1953-54. Janet met her future husband, a Phi Delt and NASA Astronaut Neil Armstrong, at an Alpha Chi Omega party. Many of her Alpha Beta friendships continued throughout her life thanks to being what her son Mark calls, "the queen of reunions." Janet was a master at keeping in touch and stayed connected with not only her Alpha Beta sisters, high school classmates and other friends, but also her kindergarten class. Later she helped form the Keep in Touch (KIT) group of NASA wives to stay connected as they left Houston. Janet was passionate about synchronized swimming and founded and coached the El Lago (Texas) Aquanauts synchronized swimming team while living in Houston. The team competed at the national level and is still thriving today. Janet enjoyed spending time outdoors, particularly the mountains of the west she deeply loved. Life took Janet to California's San Gabriel Mountains near the Edwards Air Force Base; Houston, Texas; Washington, D.C.; Lebanon, Ohio; Deer Valley, Utah; and St. George, Utah. Janet passed away on June 21, 2018, after battling lung cancer. She is survived by her two sons, Rick and Mark, daughter-in-law Wendy, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. As written in her obituary: "Janet received many awards and honors worldwide as a result of her courage and dedication during the American space program of the 1960s. By all that knew her, she will be remembered as a strong, willful woman that always reunited with a warm smile and parted ways with tears. We ask only that you honor her by standing up for that in which you believe." Alpha Beta is proud to call this Real. Strong. Woman. one of our own! First Woman Janet Shearon Armstrong '53 a Real. Strong. Woman.
