Contemporary art, in age, is that made during the last 20 years in mediums that can range from photography and sculpture to oil paintings and ceramics, and more. e gallery is open, Wednesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as some evenings. ere is no admission fee. Last year, Ellington-White also started posting "virtual" galleries of its exhibits on its website to increase its accessibility. Immersed in Abstraction, a national juried exhibition of abstract art that brought in over 240 entries from around the country, is the current online offering. e show started off the gallery season this past year and has had over 1,600 virtual visitors to date. e virtual showroom can be viewed at www.ellington-white.com/ immersed-in-abstraction. Some of the works in the online exhibit were also showcased at Ellington-White's gallery on Gillespie Street but they have since been replaced by more recent exhibitions. e virtual gallery will remain up for a good while, Mims noted. "We are trying to increase our national presence as a fine arts gallery and bringing the pulse of the national abstract trends to Fayetteville is part of that," he said. Over a four-week period in February and March, the gallery presented an exhibit called Art & Social Justice: Art for the People, By the People. e exhibit featured artworks by local and national artists dealing with issues of contemporary social justice. e Cumberland Makers & Creatives, a group associated with the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County, held a reception at the installation in mid-February. African artifacts from the John and Hazel Hales Biggers collection are also currently available in the gallery for viewing and purchasing. e gallery's current exhibit opened in late March and will run until May 25. Entitled Contemporary Sculpture: A Remix of Possibilities, it contains outdoor sculptures in Hear Local Musicians from the Fayetteville area.
