Thanks for all the goods Editor: On behalf of Ron Spliethof and the Red Bluff National Guard Unit that just has returned from a years deployment in Afghanistan, we would like to thank all those who volunteered goods to Ron and his unit through Dianne (Dianne's Beauty Shop) and Pam of Mineral for shipping them over. Things from home that are hard to get while serving overseas. Seeing this spirit of support means a lot to those serving in a strange and foreign country. It sure meant a lot to me while serving in France a few years in the 1950s, Jim Spliethof, Red Bluff Condescending attitude Editor: While Mr. Merhoff may have been born of hard times and worked hard, long hours to get where he is today and even served his country, its his condescending attitude that is the perch on which he sits. He looks down his nose at the Tea Party members supporting our constitutional rights by rallying in support of the Second Amendment. In doing so, he compared the Dont Tread on Me flag to the Southern Confederacy during our Civil War. Even to the casual observer, that would imply racism of which the Tea Party is often falsely accused. Then to show off his higher education he uses high-toned phrases and a lot of four-bit words to impress his peers and other like-minded people. My family also endured the hard times and struggled through the crash of 1929. I was born in the mid-thirties so my older siblings endured more than I did. Where I lived, there were no wheat fields or Standard stations, but my first job, at 14, was cutting wood and splitting lagging for the 16 to 1 Mine in Editor The main argument against our government focusing more on social programs is that, it is wrong to take from some in order to give it to someone else. That is true, however our government has and does take more from the poor to give to the rich than the other way around and it always has. Back in 1902 Pennsylvania coal miners upset for not getting a pay raise in 20 years and having to produce 2,600 to 3,190 pounds of coal for a credit of one ton while the owners sold it at 2,240 pounds per ton went on strike. So how did our government handle it? They sent in the National Guard to squash it. You might say that was ancient history. Yes, but Philip S. Foner plainly shows in his works on the history of our labor movement, there was not one instance where the government sided with the workers. Who got the multiple billions in bailout money? It was given to the crooks that caused the financial crises in the first place. The summer of 1952, I turned 16 and I, with my dads help, fell, limbed, peeled and skidded logs to a landing to be used for piling. The summer of 1953, I worked on a trout farm and then finished the year on a forest fire. I volunteered and joined the Navy in early 1954. When I got out of the service I enrolled at Shasta College on the G.I. Bill. I worked in the peach harvest and Forward Brothers Saw Mill in the summer and cut wood, gathered black walnuts and any other odd job I could find during the school year.
