He was right, of course. The fifth-seeded Cards finished Northern Athletic League play with an undefeated, 9-0-1 record, and will begin their attempt at a repeat run to the Division I Northern Section title game at 3 p.m. today against No. 4 Pleasant Valley on the road. The Cards havent lost a league match since 2007, and in Llamas four years coaching, he hasnt dropped a league game either (Corning tied University Prep 1-1 on Jan. 10 then downed them 4-0 on Jan. 29). Llamas credits Cornings talented stable of players to the areas coaching, which starts with youth leagues. He said there are players he knows that, if they had tried out for a spot on his team, they would have made the cut. Now the Cardinals get a rematch. In Cornings 15-3-2 overall record, Pleasant Valley (11-3-1) contributed to the Cards loss total with a 3-0 win Dec. 18 in a non-league game at Corning High School. Dallas finished 13 of 34 from 3-point range. The Mavericks were up 18 early in the third quarter before Sacramento went on a 17-6 run to get within seven. Nine of the points came on free throws, and DeMarcus Cousins had a pair of baskets early in the run. The Mavericks, who rallied from 17 down for an overtime win in Sacramento last month, didnt let the Kings do the same thing on their home court, thanks to Carter. The 14-year veteran, who still flashes signs of his Vinsanity days, hit consecutive 3pointers to end Sacramentos surge and start the Mavericks on a 19- SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) Barry Zito scurried from drill to drill on day one with a smile and a pep that showed hes a new man heading into the final year of his mega contract. He even seemed to enjoy the simple process of shadow throwing, with only a towel in hand and no ball, as San Franciscos pitchers and catchers began spring training on a gorgeous, cool day in the desert at Scottsdale Stadium. Zito suddenly has some nice momentum, not to mention the swagger that carried over from his comeback 2012 season. Manager Bruce Bochy has no doubts Zito will stay on a roll after the lefthander delivered two crucial wins during last falls run to a second championship in three years for the franchise: a victory in Game 5 of the NL championship series at Busch Stadium facing elimination, then in the opener at home of a World Series sweep against the Detroit Tigers. Zito hopes this year is even better. He would love to stay put beyond this season if all goes well. Oh, yeah, this is where I want to be, Zito said. I would love to play baseball in San Francisco until Im happily riding off into the sunset. I think last year was a big reconnection with me and with the fans. And I think thats the beauty of the game, and thats why people come out here and fill up the seats, because the game is so unpredictable. One day there could be a countdown to when youre going to be leaving the team and the next day they might want you back. My heart and soul is in the Bay Area, it always has been, he added. How could you not want to be a part of this? This is as special of a situation as there is in professional sports. General manager Brian Sabean hasnt ruled that out, especially if Zito can deliver another year like the last. The U.S. Golf Association and Royal & Ancient Golf Club have proposed a new rule that would outlaw a stroke in which the club is anchored to the body. Els used a belly putter when he won last summer at Royal Lytham & St. Annes, becoming the third winner in the last five majors to use a belly putter. Hopefully, they dont ban it, Els said Wednesday at the Northern Trust Open. Theres no data that really confirms that they have to ban it. MCT photo The Dallas Mavericks' Dahntay Jones pressures the Sacramento Kings' Tyreke Evans (13) in the first half at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas on Wednesday. DALLAS (AP) Vince Carter scored 26 points to pass Larry Bird on the NBAs career scoring list, and the Dallas Mavericks headed into the All-Star break with a 123-100 victory against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night. Carter scored 17 of Dallas last 21 points in the third quarter to help turn aside a Sacramento rally. He made five of seven 3-pointers in the quarter and ended the night with 21,796 career points for 29th on the all-time list. Bird had 21,791. Dirk Nowitzki finished with 17 points, including a 3-pointer to put Dallas ahead 100-79 early in the fourth quarter. Tyreke Evans scored 23 for the Kings, who lost their 18th straight regular season game in Dallas dating back almost 10 years.
