Why the Need?
SOLID CHAPTER,
DILAPIDATED FACILITY.
W
hile the Gamma Phi house at SMU has undergone basic and
major repairs, code compliance updates, and minimal aesthetic
improvements over the years, the aging structure of our 63-year-old home is
in critical need of major renovations to remain a viable, safe facility.
To complete just the required, minimum investment to provide a safe facility
for our sisters, we must invest more than $1.25 million. To repair, upgrade, and
maintain those things you can't see—the foundation, grading, plumbing, electrical,
and HVAC—is estimated at $750,000 alone. An additional estimated $500,000 is
needed to replace windows, kitchen equipment, and worn-out furnishings.
The reality of today's student housing expectations favors newer amenities,
advanced technology, and a beautiful, inviting home of which collegiate
members can be proud. Making that happen depends on each of us stepping
forward and funding this goal.
"For many years, the housing
board has performed needed
maintenance and repairs as the
budget has allowed, but can no
longer band-aid the structure at
3030 Daniel. The foundation
is failing, which is resulting in
significant structural issues that
must be addressed. These capital
needs require capital funding, and
to thrive at SMU, we are calling
all alumnae to step-up so we can
undergo a major renovation."
