From KKΓ to
Mayor of Amarillo
Ginger Pearson Nelson '90 Dons Her Latest Hat in Public Service
F
riendship. Leadership. Fun.
Those are the words Ginger
Pearson Nelson '90 uses to
describe Kappa Kappa Gamma.
After arriving on the Texas
Tech University campus, Ginger
decided to join a sorority to
meet friends and get involved in
college life. Little did she know
the significant impact, especially
the friendships and leadership
lessons, it would have on her life
and career.
With degrees in Spanish, advertising, and
law, Ginger has pursued many different
avenues. The latest has been becoming the
mayor of Amarillo. "Life is exciting when
you wear many hats: mom, wife, lawyer,
artist, businesses owner, and right now I am
so humbled to have the privilege of serving
as 33rd mayor of Amarillo," she said. Most
of her time is spent with her job as mayor,
where she balances speaking engagements,
strategy sessions, meetings with citizens,
building relationships with businesses and
other leaders across the state, and studying
issues that affect her city.
Amarillo, like any city, comes with its fair
share of challenges. Ginger prayed for great
guidance and great leaders to take on those
challenges, but she soon felt called to be the
one to serve. "We had no political experience
or aspiration to take such a public leadership
position, but we wanted to be obedient to
whatever God asked us to do," Ginger shared.
Perhaps her biggest challenge has been
learning how to serve in the environment
of constant political rhetoric and criticism.
"I am learning so much from both fair and
unfair criticism," she recalled. Despite the
challenges and having less privacy for their
family, the position has been rewarding.
Ginger strongly feels that her ability to be a
leader now is largely due to her time in KKΓ.
"I learned so much about leadership from my
chapter," Ginger said. "I learned from watching
my friends lead: Debbie led with fun, Cherie
led with diligence, Wendy led with kindness,
Lydia led with laughter, and Cristi led with
creativity." She had never known there were
so many ways to be a leader, and even though
she made many mistakes in her
time as an active member, she
believes that each mistake was a
learning opportunity.
Through KKΓ, Ginger also
learned the value of taking
risks. "Meeting someone
new or taking a job you have
no experience in is a risk.
Maybe you will say something
awkward or make a mistake—
these risks are uncomfortable. But getting
outside your comfort zone is where you are
more creative and grow more as a leader,"
she shared.
Because of the sorority, Ginger has gained not
just lifelong friends—but a close-knit group
of KKΓ sisters. All of her real sisters, Laura
Pearson Whitson '94, Carrie Pearson
Migura '95, Kimberly Nelson Kennedy
'85, and Kyla Nelson Sell '92, share a special
bond as Delta Psi Kappas as well. She is most
proud to be a wife to her husband, Kevin, and
a mother to children Madeleine, Pearse, and
Jace. Ginger continues to admire her Kappa
sisters who have families and challenges of
their own. She is forever thankful to each and
every one of her sisters who came into her
life and taught her about leadership and being
strong women.
