When asked about the strengths of the proposed projects, nearly all alumnae said
having a competitive facility is vital for Minnesota Alpha to remain among the best
sororities at UMN. One 1980s alumna stated, "If the other sororities are doing
something, Pi Phi needs to keep up." Many interviewees mentioned the growing
chapter size and age of the existing facility. A 1960s alumna said, "When you look
at the future with this many girls, they need to do something."
Approximately three-fourths of interviewed alumnae that had a preference
preferred the renovation and expansion of the existing chapter house. These women
feel maintaining the asset of the property is a better financial investment and is a
stronger long-term solution for the chapter. Some of their responses are listed
below:
"I think the autonomy [and independence] of a house is important and
everything can be updated and expanded. It's a beautiful house." – 1980s
alumna
"The feeling of coming home outweighs the thought of the new condo
thing." – 1990s alumna
