6 L ast spring, Illinois Alpha received a formal university reprimand for host- ing an unregistered social event at the chapter house with a sorority on December 3, 2017. Alcohol was purchased and pro- vided by a member on behalf of the chap- ter with no risk management procedures in place. At this event, an underage guest was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital by ambulance. A university reprimand in- dicates that the organization's behavior is inappropriate for the academic community. e Interfraternity Council Judicial Board found the chapter responsible for violat- ing a number of Kolusis bylaws, as well as provisions of the University of Illinois stu- dent code. e university sanctions will last a minimum of a year (pending no further incidents). e judicial board requires that the chapter participate in two seminars: an Alcohol Skills Training Program (ASTP) and an educational seminar for members about risk management. Dr. Carolyn Whittier, the assistant dean for Greek Life and Leadership and Volun- teer Programs at Valparaiso University, fa- cilitated the risk management session on October 29. Dr. Whittier is a recipient of SigEp's Distinguished Volunteer Award and is a member of SigEp's Member Safety Team. e ASTP programming took place on No- vember 7. In addition to the university reprimand, Illinois Alpha was placed on the national fraternity's "Risk Management Watch List," downgrading Illinois Alpha's insurance to the second-lowest tier (representing a 176% increase in Illinois Alpha's insurance rates). is adjustment will be reevaluated two years following the incident. e Alumni Volunteer Corporation (AVC) and the Board of Advisors are working closely with the undergraduate leadership as they comply with the provisions of the uni- versity reprimand and reevaluate the overall direction of the chapter. T his fall, a few of the members in the Illinois Alpha Chapter made the journey down to Chicago to attend the annual Carlson Leadership Academy (CLA). e conference was essentially a regional meeting with repre- sentatives from all Sigma Phi Epsilon chapters coming together in an attempt to maintain orga- nization, recognize the accomplishments of our fellow brothers, and learn newer and more inno- vative strategies from those that we would asso- ciate with around us to improve our individual chapter. Upon arrival, we were asked to check in and attend meetings for our individual executive positions. is would be the jump start into im- proving our leadership skills and getting to know the strategies of the other Sigma Phi Epsilon chapters around the nation. As Friday's meetings concluded, everyone returned to their rooms to prepare for a long Saturday ahead of us. e next day included exquisite meals along with inspiring speeches by Sigma Phi Epsilon alum- ni, including but not limited to Illinois Alpha's own Keith Bruce '87. As meetings continued, we developed strategies to further improve our influence upon our respective chapters and make our chapters the model for Greek life around us. One of the greatest things about CLA was the professional aura around it. Entering meetings in business professional dress and staying at a place as prestigious as the Hilton gave the entire con- ference a real-world and professional feel to it. It was also amazing to be able to get off campus for a weekend and realize that there is life outside of Champaign. It gave our members tremendous experience and quality bonding time. Going to Carlson provided a great experience for our younger members to make them feel involved as well. ey have taken on leadership roles at a young age, which will help them prepare for any crossroads that our fraternity may come across. Overall, Carlson was an excellent experience and one that everyone should hope to have the op- portunity of undergoing.
